Has anyone heard about this? I don’t want to start any sort of political discuss on this forum, but I got one of those campaign ads from one of the county supervisor candidates who claims her opponent supports building a tunnel in through Los Padres. The ad stated the tunnel would bring cars from Riverside County to South Orange County via a tunnel by the 241. Has anyone heard of this before? I’m not sure I would like more cars back there, please you know the Cali way of life if there is a freeway, must build more homes. Anyway just wanted to know if this claim was true or if anyone had any other insight.

Not Los Padres. Cleveland National Forest. Tunnel through the Santa Ana's. If you thought the political fight over the toll road was a tough one, you aint seen nothin' yet. Sadly, I'm sure it will happen though. Better off widening Ortega IMO.

Ok, I will stop smoking crack before posting. I have no idea why I said Los Padres (that Ventura County). All those cars driving through the Santa Ana's can't be good for the aminals, water or anything else, much less us mountain bikers.

I have lived in a few different places and Orange County is the capitol of expansion and devolpment. This county is run by the big devolpers, so that tunnel has a good chance of becoming a reality.

When I visit where I grew up, Sonoma and Mendocino Counties, much of it has remain little changed. Pt. Arena sees no expansion, it fact it keeps loosing population..

I don't think the tunnel will happen. They have no idea how much it will cost. Plus there so much other geologic stuff down there that would complicate it even more. But eventually there will probaly be a road through the Santa Anas. :(

I don't know of any OC residents who think the tunnel is a good idea.
I'm sure there's a few of them out there, but not many.
It's the Inland Empire government that is pushing for the tunnel.

Last I read the cost was estimated at $1 billion / mile. Not very cost effective.

Make everybody ride bikes and this discussion would be over.

CONSIDERING THE NEW TECHNOLOGY THEY CAN DO THIS "TUNNEL" AT A COST EFFECTIVE PRICE. pROBLEM IS, WHOSE GOING TO BANKROLL IT?

Sorry about the caps??? To lazy to change it.

Dude you are so right. How many guys wake up in OC and say man the weather is way too nice. I need to get to a place that is hotter, dryer and windier right now. Oh and I don’t want to take the 91 either! It would be for the guys living in Temecula that work in Irvine and stuff. Could you imagine what the 5 and 405 would be like with all of them coming out of a tunnel? Plus Steve Jackson would be pissed b/c it would be right by his ranch!

I'm thinking there's not too many people living in Temecula and commuting to the OC. Most people who live in Temecula commute to San Diego. The majority of the Inland Empire commuters come from well north of Temecula.

Sure, but everybody wakes up and says, "Damn, I'm paying way too little money for my house. I need to move someplace where the real estate values are totally overpriced and the housing density is maxed out and traffic is completely sha-glanked on the freeways and streets. Oh, and while I'm at it, I think it'd be great if the beaches were the most polluted in the state as well! Where can I find such a place?"

Yeah, there's no reason to live in the Inland Empire and commute to the OC.

Not to say that I'm in favor of the tunnel. But, let's not get all giddy with Inland Empire bashing.

Good call. I have no prob with the I.E., I grew up there when I was a kid and most of my still family lives there. What I have a problem with is ruining more of California's land for commuters. What I was trying to point out wasn't which county is better (I don't really care). I was only saying that OC candidates are sending out ads making it seem like the tunnel would benefit OC residents. In reality it would benefit Riverside county commuters trying to get to OC/Long Beach/LA (cutting out the need to use the 91). As far as housing prices, they pretty much suck everywhere in this state. Man dad in Rancho Cucamonga and he paid over $800,000 for his house. I almost puked my pants when I heard that! Now it is a nice house that kinda money doesn’t get you much where I’m at, but still that’s some serious $$. The tunnel proposal I saw has the entrance just north of Lake Elsinore, that way Folks from I.E. and Temecula can use it. Most of my friends do commute from Temecula to OC/LA area not San Diego; but there is a good chance they are all retarded!

Anyway, didn’t mean to sound like the us versus them deal as counties go; just the us (mountain bikers/people who like the Santa Ana’s) versus the people who want to shorten their commute and any cost.

Right on. I feel you, dog. :)

I wonder, though, if there's a bright side to this? I mean, is it better to have a tunnel than a road going up and through the Santa Anas? I'm sure we all agree that neither is actually wanted. But, I think that it's kind of inevitable. That fact is that SoCal is a great place to live and a lot of people want the life that's available her. So, I think something will be done. The question is, what is the lesser of two evils?

Can't we just close our borders, like we did with Mexico?

Oh yeah, nevermind.

At the risk of dating myself here. I remember when as kids we used to go hunting where Laguna Nigel and Lake Forest sit today. I remember when they were talking about making a city way down in the boonies of OC, I think they were going to call it "Mission Viejo". In fact I remember when there wasn't really a city of Irvine. There was the ranch of course and a little later the university and this wasn't that long ago.

I hate to tell you, but in the not to distant future there will be a tunnel and a number of roads crisscrossing the Santa Ana's. We probably have the best all year round climate of any other place in the nation and even CA bashers have to admit that. Some say they need the changing of the seasons, well move to the mountains.

I grew up some in OC and my family still lives there, but I'll stay out of the congestion. I don't promote where I live because I like it the size it is with very little traffic compared to the other surrounding counties.

I've lived in a number of other states, and I say without a doubt for year round living there is nothing better then SoCal. Even with roads and tunnels.

well personally i'm gonna build lots of am/pm's, berger kings,7/11's,and best of all MAC DERTTORPEEDOS , with lots of parking lots. oh yah we'll specialize in mt. lion bergers, cause they'll have no place else to to eat,we'll have people bergers,AND lion bergers.

While I'm sure that some people do commute from Temecula, I doubt it is enough to warrant freeway expansion. The tunnel coming out in Lake Elsinore is probably because it's just about the only area that can take it.

Temecula's population is around 100,000 and Interstate-15 alone receives over 250,000 Riverside County-to-San Diego commuter vehicles everyday. So, I'm thinking most of those are probably cars from southern I.E.

I commute from Temecula to San Diego and from 0400-0800 traffic is insane. I used to commute from Temecula to Corona and traffic wasn't near as bad heading that way, but the 91 is always backed up well into Riverside starting as early as 0430.

I blame those darn San Bernadino people:protest: ;)

Going to OC is the only other option for many of us to bring in the mighty $$...its that or LA, cuz SB does not pay the 4yr edumacated person waht thar worth. I drive 100miles back and forth to work, but I'm lucky cuz i go in at 6:30...the afternoon traffic at 3:30 still sucks though.
Regardless I still would not want a tunnel to screw up more of our limited OC resources.
