A friend of mine in the UK was killed during a group ride from London to Brighton; a van came around a corner on the wrong side of the road and just plowed into a group of cyclists coming the other way.

Never underestimate the stupidity of other road users, it's a damn shame nobody got the plate of the truck.

Great job and thanks for the write up Impy, let us know if we can do anything for Carlos, I figure some kind of collective chocolate fund is in order or something :)

    So sorry about your friend.

Was the witness someone in a car? If so, sucks he didn't follow the truck to get a plate number or follow the driver to his home. That's so infuriating it was a hit and run and he was never found. God forbid I'm in a car and ever to witness to such an accident, but if I'm able to to follow the jerk at least long enough for a plate number, I'll do so.

I'd like to believe what someone else said about "karma will find its way back to the driver who hit him" but I'm not strong believer. A lot of cruelty and heinous acts go unanswered and unpunished in this world.

thanks for a great, sad story. i think i know right where you were--very close to one of my favorite surf spots, st. annes, where i almost drowned years ago. it seems like beauty and tragedy are often connected. let us know how things progress.

He was in a truck, although he was headed in the opposite direction. As he was the only one there in those first few moments I don't blame him for not pulling a U and following the guy - he got out of his truck to walk over to Carlos (same time as I rolled up).

    Totally sucks though.

Gosh, thanks everyone for your responses. I'm getting all emotional again.

I am going to point Carlos to this thread when he is back up on his laptop. I know he will appreciate the awesome STR bike family's thoughts and prayers!

Wishing all the best for Carlos in a speedy recovery! As tragic as it was, it is a blessing that he is on the path of recovery. :)

Very well written Impy. I love to ride the road but it is a bit of a crap shoot which totally sucks. Healing vibes to Carlos. It would be great to see him post a bit here. Take care.

I don't know either of you but as a fellow cyclist I'm touched by your story. +1 on Carlos healing and I hope he sees this board. Cars suck!
