Trails in San Luis Obispo/Pismo???

Hey gang, I need your help again. THere's a good chance that I'll be spending next weekend in a Pismo beach-house, and you know I'll be taking my bike. Has anyone ridden any good trails there? In my searches I've found Montana De Oro to be one of the more popular ones, and I believe it's the Truvativ testing grounds. Does anyone have any pics? Two other trails I heard mention of were Shooters Canyon and Morning Glory, but I have no idea what they look like or what they entail. Ideally I'd like to find some rolling singletrack with great views (ocean views). Montana De Oro supposedly has a decent downhill section with berms and whatnot, in which case I might take my Bullit. Otherwise I'll be on my Wily 29er hardtail.

I've ridden Montana de Oro a couple times and the views are great. The Bullit may be a bit of overkill for those trails. Sorry no pics. There's a nice route for there on Geoladders. I believe Kentonn created it.

I've hit Montana De Oro and Morro bay a few years back. cannot recall specific trails we hit but all good stuff (one park got deep fog and was a bit surreal while riding),

not sure where u live/work but i have a mtn bike book on central coast if u want to borrow for trip. PM me if interested and we can see if can arrange handoff. note I am heading to Sedona for riding at end of week so needs to take palce before then.

Montana de Oro State park is a great place to ride. I was there about 2 years ago staying at Pismo Beach too. We went over to check out the riding in the park and its is very good. We started at Ridge Trail and went all the way to the top. Definetly a lot of hike-a-bike sections going to the peak. I Forgot what trail sytem we connected with but it had some fun downhills. Here are some shots of of trip. It was overcast untill we got near the top of the mountain.

Definetly pick up a map. Pretty informative and thats what we used to navigate around. Talk to the locals too, we got a lot of help from them. Have fun up there!

There is a trail up there at the end of madonna street after intersecting los osos. I think it might even be called madonna trail. Look it up!

Thanks for the offer Kid. I actually just found my Southern California trail book that has 3 rides listed for Montana De Oro, with maps and everything, so I should be good to go.

CalEpic - I think you're right about the Bullit overkill, but I just love riding that thing. Plus, it has a granny gear whereas my 29er is only a 1x9 with a 32t chainring.

mtnbikerdude87 - thanks for those pics, that's just what I was looking for. Man, there isn't a tree in that park, huh? Anyway, from the looks of some of the climbs, I guess I'll be taking the 29er and leaving the Bullit at home.

jruiz - I did run across a Madonna trail while I was researching San Luis Obispo, but it wasn't a very revealing trail description. I might have to dig deeper.

If you want, drop me a line and I can give you some more details of what n where. Most of the trails in the area are really cool with bitchen views. That's if it is not foggy. A little bit of everything as far as variety goes. If all else fails, stop by Art's Bike shop or Cambria bike. Both shops usually have good people working and will fill you in. Cambria bike runs an evening run every monday starting at 6:30ish.

Thanks Buzz. Between this board and MTBR I've gotten a lot of great info. I think I've decided that I'll take the Bullit and ride Madonna Mtn and do RockGarden on the backside. Maybe I can do this loop twice.

This post is probably too late, however. I created these six routes on geoladders. I liked Madonna Mtn. rides, however. The better rides are out in Montana de Oro and North of San Luis along the Cuesta grade.

WORD!!!! I couldn't tell you jack about any trails up there, but Jocko's is the bomb! As kids we always used to ride at Pismo Dunes. Every trip, Saturday night was a nice dinner out at either Jockos, Far Western Tavern, or McClintocs. Jockos was always my favorite. I've even made a long dinner/drive out of bombing up there on a Saturday afternoon just to have a good steak for dinner then a nice drive back down the coast, get off at Kanan, run the canyons, then continue on home.
