    Trailbuilding How-To Video (IMBA/USFS)

For those who haven't been able to attend an IMBA trailbuilding workshop, here's a starter that will give you some of the basic info you'll need. I've had this video for some time, but have come to realize that very few people have ever seen it. I've been told that the videos were made to share, so I'm sharing...

I highly recommend watching all the videos in order, as the principles outlined in the early chapters are referred to throughout the rest. More than that, I'd recommend doing the IMBA workshop, or working with experienced trailbuilders and learning by doing it.

The original DVD was about 40 minutes long, but for Youtube I've split it up into it's Intro plus Eight chapters.

    It is OK

I got this DVD from the USFS a while ago. It is OK with some good basic information but I have to admit I was expecting more. It tells you some things to do but is lacking on showing you how to do them. When I am out working on the trail, I notice that a lot of the techniques are difficult to apply. There is just no substitute for experience. You can learn way more out in the field then on the TV, especially if you go with someone who knows what they are doing.

Jeff, yeah, I agree that a vid is no substitute for "on the job" training, or taking an actual class from IMBA. Every trail situation is different, and we have to be adaptable and that doesn't come across in the vid.

But I'd rather see people have an idea of the basics from the vid, than not have any clue and just start building trails straight down the fall line....

I can only speak for myself, but I had no idea there were all those elements deliberately planned into trail building.

You're getting us primed up for all the trail work needed when we're finally allowed back ino the burned-out parts of the Gabes!
