So we did our usual Mon. night ride out of the Incycle San Dimas store to Marshall Cyn. Marshall is getting in better shape since receiving it's bi-annual plowing, man I don't like politicians, anyhow, back to the subject. So there were four of us in one group, and four in another. Dirty-t joined the group I was riding in, and I knew that our good times were going to just get better with him around. Our ride went along without any glitches until Dirttorpedo did as his name suggests, and turned into a human dirttorpedo. We must've been doing about 20 mph crossing a stream, when he was suddenly airborne in the most awkward style. It was sort of a cross between a Dead Sailor and the Bubba scrub, only problem was that his bike landed in the full tabletop position in about 8" deep sand. Bike came to an immediate stop, but Chris didn't. Hope your finger/knuckle is ok Chris.

Nice ride tonight as usual. I got separated from the 2nd group when I got a flat right after the golf course. Josh was willing to wait but i didn't want to hold up the rest of the guys so I told him we'll regroup at the sngletrack junctions. After putting in a new tube i made it up the junction but by that time it was pitch dark and nobody was around. :?: I turned on my light and waited about 5 minutes for someone to ride back down. By that time you start hearng weird sounds and seeing things up there. I didn't want to become somethings dinner and hauled @ss out of there back to the car.

Sorry to hear about the finger Chris, hope you heal quick.

It can happen to anyone. That's what makes mtbing so exciting. Crashing is part of the experience. We all crash sooner or later, sometimes better, sometimes worse. My heart goes out to you, Dirty. You came back several times for me on Tour, so I won't gloat over your trail sample. Get better, dood.

Y'know, though, the Oliver Stone side of my brain says this is why they go in and grade the trails. I think people complain about the bikers and they make the trail soft so you have to slow down.

Yes, I'm paranoid. So?

Ya know the Oliver Stone part of your brain might be making sense right now, except it was on a part of the trail that was not graded and ALL are encouraged to go fast through there. It happened at very bottom of the trail, at the last creek crossing on the way back, that has a ledge when you come out of the creek. He hit that and went flying. Plus, not always easy to see in the dark. I still wish I would have been there to see that.

No need for a conspiracy theory. The homeowners/equestrians own the trail which the city of La Verne maintains. We mountain bikers are fortunate to have access to the trail system they built. Always pull over to the side and yield to the equestrians when you see them on the trail. Most all of them will say thank you and smile. A trail grading is a minor inconvenience as this trail gets enough traffic so it's gets packed down quickly.

Four years ago I went to a city council meeting to find out why they were grading the trail and to ask if we might let it go for a few years to see how things would work out. I had previously emailed the parks and recreation department along with the mayors office and was told if I wanted to get some one on one, this would be the place to do it. What I found out was that part of the park is maintained by the city and it is considered a public park and by law they are required to maintain it to a certain standard that requires them to grade the trails. The upper section is maintained by the county and they don't always grade their section as they have a different standard then the city does. The property was originally owned by a Dr. Miller who had taught and attended some of the Claremont colleges. He donated all of Claremont Wilderness to the colleges and the Marshall Canyon section to the city of La Verne with the stipulation that it remain in a "wild" state. When I asked what does "wild" constitute, they weren't thrilled that by bringing this up, that it could be means for a legal argument and could end up in court. The downside to this is, they could refuse to do maintenance on the trail, then deem it dangerous and close it to all. The reality is, there are few equestrians in La Verne, but the people who do live there like the horse nature of the area and try to keep it that way. I have tried to get together with the city to see if we maybe able to join in a trail maintenance day or two and was told Thank you, but No thank you.

My understanding is that the parks dept. likes to have a walk/hike get together twice a year to "show off" their trail, so they decided that grading it would be the best answer for their shin-dig. In my own opinion, since no one's asking, it seems that they could have a really cool trail if they actually maintained it, or had it maintained by the actual users of the trail. Wouldn't it be cool to have some 50 foot road gap jumps going over people on horseback?

I guess I will really have to start riding my butt off to keep up with the first group to see all the good crashes... Now if I can just get my butt to Incycle to get me a light so that I can see what is in front of me when the sky goes dark.

Thanx to Josh and Dean for attempting to light my way.

Please don't mention butt with a thread that has dirty posting in it. I still am having nightmares of a very white and hairy ass riding down the 71. Ohhhhhh, the horror.
