Right at the shoot I looked at my lap time and thought, Great, I'm gonna make it! Right after I ran out of steam and no more kick. I guess I need to practice more intervals. Back again at noon today.

Rode Aliso with Jordan today. Got to the bottom of Cholla and ran into some guys from STR and ask us if we were doing this 5 min thing. Didn't really plan on it. No warm up, 2nd ride after a 12 day layoff, but I couldn't resist so I went for it.

Started the clock just past the bench. Went out way too hard a gear and bogged down a bit on the 2nd steep switchback, stood on it and thought I was going to bust my chain.
Got my momentum going again, but by the time I got to the chute section, I was tired, but managed a time of 3:47.

I start my timer for Rock-it at the intersection with The fire road at the top. I think it's called West Ridge. I stop timing at Coyote after that stutter bump descent.

Let me know when you want to ride.

I went out today to try for that sub 5 minute Cholla run. I first road up Mathis and tried to beat my best time of 13:22. I busted my ass up that hell climb and my time was 14:53. At the top I had to try to keep my breakfast down and then I layed down on the bench until the little white lights stoped flying around. That sucked. I then went down Rock-it and over to Cholla. I gave Cholla all I could and managed 4:58 and 182 bpm heart rate. I think I'm ready to back it down and cruise for a while.

Andrew and I were there today at about 3:30. He timed himself at about 6 minutes I think, and I was in the 10 range. My speedometer only times when the wheels are moving. If I didn't stall out/rest it would have been 6:22.

There is not one person that can catch me on Rock-it.

My wife thought it would be funny to post it, but I think it's completely true.

Damn! Gene, I guess you aren't too worried about hurting the knee before the big one. Great time!

Thanks Jeff. Wasn't my best effort. In 2007, I was riding really strong before I started having knee issues in 2008. I've done it in under 3 min before.

Genus! 3:47? Wow, that's insane! What bike, what gear? That is some serious climbing right there. I'm going to head out in a bit here. Plan on being at Cholla at 10:20 or so. Hope to see some fellow challengers out there.

Patkel, sweet! I think it really helps to do a good climb before like Rock-it or Mathis. You're fully stretched out and warmed up.

Garret, you'll get there man! You'll know you can get into the 5's when you can just bust up the chute. Best of luck.

Ya I told Jordan I wouldn't do it again anytime soon.

    IMG_2984.jpg

I was in middle ring and 4th smallest was is a 16. Too hard a gear and it bogged me down some, till I shifted into an easier gear. You'll have to do that in order to keep the same cadence all the way up.

I had no warm up and it was only my 2nd ride in nearly 2 weeks.

JoJo's right. I would've been quicker on my SS or my HT. I forgot to lockout my fork too. #-o

The SS'ers aren't even runnin' 2:1. This is like 2.2:1 and only 57.9 gear-inches (your middle is a 36t right Gene?)

Forget it. I'm not playing with you cheaters if you're going to use the "easy gears". I could probably pick Gene AND his 23lb bike up and carry them to the top faster than I could pedal it anyway.

I hope you all appreciate my feeble attempts at humor.

The sub-5 minute times are Nucking Futs. Now you guys are talking sub-4 minute times... Well, I hope you can trick the devil into giving your soul back, or get off the "juice" you're taking, cause you boys just ain't normal....

Gene's time is f'n amazing! I'm challenged but not sure if I'll pick up the gauntlet ;)

On the subject of SS vs Gears I find that the issue I have with SSing on Cholla is one of traction. The couple of times you really want to get on it, the rear tire slips. This is especially true of the 'Crosser.

I've moved on to tubeless on the MTB and am typically now lowering my tire pressure to the low 20's or below.

D'oh! 5:08 today. Looked down at the rock section and saw some 4's on the screen and booked it as hard as I could and just missed it. Still, I shaved amost 30 seconds off yesterday's time by pacing myself and recovering in the flats, then busting up the grades. Now I know I can do it.

Kevinator and I did Cholla today in 5 minutes at a pretty comfortable pace in the middle ring. Then, on to Mathis (really rutted from the rain) -- we reached the bench kiosk on top in 14 minutes-- again, at a moderate, comfortable pace. Kev was holding back to stay at my pace since I was totally out of shape after being off the bike for 3 weeks.

Nope, on my SS it's a 34t, the Tribal it's the standard 32t.

    My SS 'Crosser is a 34 x 20 with 165mm cranks.
That is 46.4 gear inches. 2x1 is way too tall given both my knees and my desire to be ridin' a SS when I'm OMRs age ;)
