I have yet to make it all the way down without walking the "turny" sections and the "bumpy" parts :-k

Back in my racing days, my buddy and I used to do anaerobic intervals up Cholla . I think we used to climb the first few in the 4:30 range, and finish closer to 5 min. in the last couple. Definitely a great climb to push your heart rate into the upper limits...

I still maintain that Mathis is the devil, and Cholla is his son. :-s I'm getting better at Cholla, but I still can't make it without walking a good bit. It gets shorter every time I do it though.

I have no idea what my times are. I'll check it when I go on Friday.

Well like I said, I wasn't really timing myself, but when I did it I was training for a couple of XC races and was pushing myself pretty hard. Last time I rode up mathis I was 21 and change cruising with no stops. on my 31lb. trek remedy to boot!

My best time from the bottom of Mathis to the picnic tables at Top of the World is about 19 minutes... and I'm pretty slow compared to some of the doods I normally ride with 8-[

Too funny. The 20+% grade at the bottom makes for a tough start. I've always wondered what the exact numbers are on those two sections. Riding it tomorrow afternoon.

I've been off the bike for two months so I wouldn't bother going to time myself but does anyone have an approximation as to what a continuous cadance using the granny ring and a 28 cog in the rear would be? Or can people pair their times up with which gear combo they spend most of their time on this climb in?

edit - or alternatively what gear are people going around 5 minutes using mainly?

Mathis on my best day was 11:47

But I have to admit that this is the hardest climb I do on a regular basis and I rarely hammer it.

The best I've ever done up Cholla is 6:28, but that was my second up. Did Mathias in 14:32 (post to post). My regular loop is up Mathias, down Lynx, up Cholla, down Rock-it. Best time from the church lot and back in 1:12:23.
I have my Edge GPS set for Mark's Loop, Lap marker for all the posts. I've heard some crazy times when people just look down at their watch. My goal is take Mathias in 12min. If I can get to the gate in 5:30 and the left turn at the tree in 10min, I've got a shot at 12. The top riders make TOW in 15!
Cholla is a bitch of a 2nd climb after you have done Mathias it's bigger brother. I look down at my heart rate to make sure I'm not going to explode!
Maybe at lunch today I'll try and come in at MILF park and hit it first.:-s

Best to do this during the week, mid day. This trail has a lot of traffic. Hikers, joggers, bikes, kids. If your trying to make a good time, some times we get a little rude. Remember this is fun, right?:?:

that sounds about right. I checked my geo-log and fastest time I can find for me is 4:23, with avg around 4:45. Busting 5 minutes is a good goal and not easy to do.

My buddy and I are going to be doing Aliso today so I will need to see how long it takes me to get up Cholla.

We are riding at 4:30 today if anybody is interested.
