Ummm, is there a way to put a chainguide on a set of XT cranks with triple rings? I'm tired of my chain flapping around while killing it on the rocky stuff, but it's my all mt. ride, so I want at least two chainrings and want to keep it light. I just bought the cranks, so I'm not real interested in changing. I'd be happy to lose the big chainring, if necessary. Help! :?:

Dual ring chainguides are becoming pretty popular, check out the E-13 DRS Blackspire Stinger

That said, a chain guide will reduce but not completely eliminate chain slap. Best fix i';ve found is an old tube wrapped around the chainstay.

    Couple options.
Find an old Hiem 3 chain ring guide. Might be hard to find.

Go with a 2 ring option and you have a few options, I prefer e13 DRS but if your looking for weight Blackspire Stinger is a good light weight option.

Another thing to help is make sure you are in biggest ring in front to take up as much slack as you can.

I put a stinger on my heckler recently. It has pretty much prevented dropping the chain. I think its only happened once now, whereas I used to drop it all the time before.

The only problem I've had is that the stinger has come loose a couple times (I have the BB mount version) and I've had to remove cranks and re-tighten the BB cups.

If you have ISCG tabs you likely wouldn't have this problem.

Overall I'd recommend it. For $22 you really can't go wrong and if it doesn't work just get the E13 DRS or MRP LRP.

if you drop to a 2 ring setup, try a 34 or 36 t middle ring to help make up some of the gearing you lost.

My nomad runs a 36/22 with a stinger from blackspire

    Thanks for the info.
I have been thinking of the 36/22 combo for my Heckler. Apart from a little front deraileur adjustment, any other issues you have experienced?

PS. I was thinking of running without a chainguide.

i too am thinking of running without a guide.
To keep the chain from falling off - the guide rubs the rear triangle....

you are welcome to ride my 36/22 at hurkey tomorrow :)

2 ring is all i need... a 36 makes it very nice

Simon if you go with a bigger front say 36 I have a high clamp SLX FD brand new in box if you want to change the FD. Its the 2 chainring one.

Just be careful if you use a 22/36 and an Med cage you may exceed capacity of the RD too.

Just something else to think about....Double check your chain length, if its long itll slap. There are more than a few chain tension devices available fro three ring setups, Heim, Kore's Chain reactor<alot of maintanance, there are others.

But as most said, if your riding tat aggressive, switch over to a 24/36<Proper max between rings for being able to still shift> go to a Dual ring Guide system<I prefer E13Drs, Yes I have gotten the stinger to fail, pretty regularly>Shifting isnt an issue, you just have to set your limits to block out the last shift.

    Its easy to setup

Thanks everyone for the 411. I ordered a Saint 36t chainring and I'm keeping my 22t granny. I'm getting an MRP carbon bashplate and an LRP chainguide. A new chain and cassette will complete the deal. Joe at BikeCo recommended the parts and let me ride his bike similarly equipped. Should be great - and light.

Send pics when you smash the fancy carbon bash ring.
    Broken carbon is kühl.
I'm all down for the DRS by e13. Never has failed me.
Now about that fancy XTR carbon rear derailleur (yes, medium cage)...I've blown the spring around inside the pulley cage quite a few times. Trail fixable tho.

And I've always wanted one of those MRP carbon bash guards. I'll admit it.

I don't usually bash much of anything, so I just got suckered into buying something blingy and light. First ride on the new 2x9 MRP setup tomorrow. Went to 24t granny, 36t big. We shall see!
