First off I would like to thank the brave souls that risked the weather to do this ride.

I picked up Steve in Irvine at 7am, it was raining and in rained all the way to Highway 2. I risked the ride because at 6am this AM Mt. Wilson web cam stated foggy drizzle and no rain. The radar showed heavy rain in the LA basin but it was low clouds and they were not getting over the San Gabriel's. We were lucky and Mt. Wilson had stopped the weather and winds were calm and the ride is two ridges in.

We were 10 minutes late and Eric *Foshizzle*, Brain *MTBMaven*, Eric *STJunkie* and one other person who's name escapes me right now...sorry...were waiting.

Eric had mech problems and had to turn around a little time after the first major climb. If you ever ride with him don't fall for the "gurly man" stuff he is just sandbaging *beware*.

Eric (the only other true singlespeeder) and Steve took off up Josephine Fire Road leaving me to my own. Steve whom seems to have the enery of the Energizer Bunny blew on by the Colby Canyon Singletrack Trailhead and continued the climb. It was good that the road dead-ended at the old burnt down Josephine Fire Lookout, or he may have ended up in Palmdale. So after getting cold and bored he decided to come back down to find us waiting at the trailhead.

So the other so called Single Speeder who I will not front off on an open forum. But his first intial is *Brain*, has a 20 tooth granny bail out ring on the front. So by now I am the only SSer on this ride. I know life is not fair. I truley want to thank you guys for waiting up for me on some of those climbs.

I think Steve enjoyed the ride because Scott has some mad skills and he enjoyed following his line on the downhills. Steve was riding a 40+ lb 6-Pack with is more bike than that trail needs so he looks for things to keep himself entertained. Like hunking rocks, tables, walls and any other trail obstacle he can find.

Anyway the ride was excellent as Strawberry always is, no injuries, no flats, and one disappointing mech. Sorry that some you chose to bail due to the weather...I understand...it was nasty weather in the basin...we will do it again soon. Plus a Mt. Hilyer Boulder Field play-day when the snow clears. Here are a few pics, my camera does not do good in low light so some of the tech stuff came out blurry.

dude, for which bike? Do you need lockout? There is a killer deal on a 2005 Fox Vanilla R 130 at Jensonusa, so long as 7.5" is all you need for steerer tube. Can set it at 80mm....one of my riding buddies run the Vanilla at 80mm on all his hardtails. http://jensonusa.com/store/product/FK500A00-Fox+Vanilla+R+130+05+-+Cut+Steerer.aspx

figured I would throw it out there as it is a good deal dollarwise anyway....cheers

Thats what I took off (Vanilla). I want something a little shorter, but I don't want to cut the Vaniila steerer tube. Mine is 03 model. With lockout. Thanks for the heads up, that really is a killer deal.

sorry, but what do you mean shorter? the fork can have spacers added to make it 130, 100, or 80mm. At 80mm it would be a typical height 80mm fork. The steerer tube would only be cut depending on how many spacers you wanted to run under your stem. Sorry if I completely missed something.

Cheers

Thanks for letting Tris and I join up with you guys. I was expecting more rain than we got. Turned out to be a good ride. Nice to finally ride with some of the guys on this board. Here's some pics I took.

Awesome trail plus its a new trail for me so that made it even better. If I had to compare it to trails in OC it would be something like this.
Climbing Josephine fire road is like climbing up to 4 Corners
Then you get some slight single track climbing through the mountains (lance you would really like riding through this forest)
The first downhill section is like San Juan with the exposure
The second downhill section is like Trabuco (really fun)

It was really cool to ride and meet you all. I had a really good time. Sorry you had to be the only "true" SSer out there Dean. I am not man enough to do those rides in 32x17, I have to downshift to 22x17 to make the climbs. I am normally a 22x34 climber so 22x17 still kicks my a$$.

Unfortunately I don't any eye witnesses, but the highlight of my ride was cleaning the waterfall on a fully rigid bike! I went back to attempt it again with witnesses but got bounced off my line because I wasn't carrying enough speed and had to stop before the end. But damn that was fun. The waterfall seems to have been cleaned up a bit but still quite a drop.

I hope to have my RP3 back from PUSH this week so I can ride my 575 next weekend, that is if the weather cooperates. Look forward to riding with you all again sometime.

Brian I hope you know I am just kiding with ya.

PS: Don't forget me next ***Baldy*** trip! I will bring gears and suspension so I am not as slow.

Dean

thanks for posting those pictures to put salt in the wound! :)

still annoyed my bike crapped on me right before the fun started.....

I am riding Sullivan Canyon area Sunday but hopefully can ride with you guys again....it was fun.

cheers
