Ride Report STR Hurkey Creek Campout

Hey Lynn, I knew we were in great hands with you and your crew giuding us. I had no doubt we were going to hit the good stuff. I know Scott likes to explore and check out new trails and routes just like I do. After several trips showing Scott around up here in Kernville I remember writing him about riding in the San Gabriels. He wrote back,"I have a great route in mind. Payback is not always a bitch."
The fact that you guys were going to be there was one of the main motivations for me to work things out so I could make the trip. The next time you are following me I will try to crash for you or something.

I can't take the credit for guiding, but it was really nice to have you guys in Hurkey with us! I hope you make your way back down here soon so we can share some of our favorite San Gab rides with you!

My yard is about 1/18th the size of yours but there's a hot shower and room for a couple of tents! You guys are always welcome.

Sorry for the late post, but every time I tried to load some pics, I got sidetracked.

First off, I want to thanks Allison and Justin for setting this up. Wow, what a turnout, I had a blast! Vickie and I arrived about 4:45pm Friday and the camps were quiet because everyone was out riding. Not long before Tim(jasonmason) and Jessie(integradriv3r) came in from their afternoon lap.

After setting up camp, I went out for a quick lap with the Manns, denmother, Roger, Andy(Sprockethead). Just did a quick 5 mile loop to wet our appetites for the next day.

After the ride, we got cleaned up and joined in the the fun. We'd go and make our rounds around the campsite. Lots of familiar faces, but lots of new ones as well.

We got up to the top of Ernie Maxwell's and linked up with Steppie's group

IMG_0135.jpg

As we all start to descend Ernie Maxwell's, I cramped up, but was able to rub it out. A bit further down, I come across this rock that I tried to roll but didn't have the momentum to get over and as I tried to power over, I cramped again and that's when I fell over. I had the wind knocked out of me, but at that point, I didn't think anything else. Thanks to danoplato and not sure who else for stopping and making sure I was ok. :bang:

I really didn't stop to take too many more pics as the groups were on the move. Here are the rest.

So aside from busting up my ribs(only 1 broken, couple bruised), this trip was a blast. Always to see the usual suspects, but great to see so many others join the fun.

I'm not gun shy about my "big" bike experiment. I know it's tougher to climb with no doubt, but the descents are a blast when you have 6" of travel. Props to all you "big" riders out there for rocking the "big" bike all the time.:bang::bang:

I'm looking forward to the next group campout. Thanks to all for a great time!

Gene - thanks for the pics!!

We're ready to head back up there whenever you are :)

I'm seriously thinking about weekend 2?? It seems like it wound up being a cheap weekend! $20 if you shared a site, and since most of us climbed up the truck didn't move for nearly 3 days!

I think we could make some decent loops out of the singletrack off of May Valley as well if for some reason we didn't want to climb all the way up to Cherry on Top. Though it really wasn't that bad. If we had stopped a little less could've been a quicker ride. But I didn't mind being out there from 9-4 either!

Like usual, i didn't take any pictures...sorry. I like to leave that to those that are waaaaay better than me at it.

What a trip! Jesse and i kinda missed the thursday night ride due to time-consuming mechanicals that we put off working on until the time of the ride, but still managed to make it out to the after-party. And the after-after-party. And then some other places, until jesse started insulting random people in spanish, at which time it was definitely time to go.

Coffee in hand the following morning we somehow managed to pack everything into his Honda Fit and head out by 11. Set up camp early in the afternoon, and went back to trying to fix my irksome rear wheel (which i never did get straight). Come late afternoon we headed out with jonathansykes81 and luna for an afternoon lap of most of the 24 hour course, with some extra singletrack thrown in - great time riding with you guys! Came back to Gene and Vickie unloading next door ad set about to making dinner and setting up my floorless tent...

Has anyone else seen how much Jesse eats? Holy crap he can put it away! 4 burgers, carne asada, plus who knows what else he dragged up around camp...wow. Eventually ended up closing out the night with the epic's at what i thought was midnight, which i later found out was 2am. time flies, i guess...

Saturday attempted to take off on the ride with the manns, et. al., and was summarily broken on the climb up to exfoliator. Just couldn't keep pace that morning (tequila maybe, craig?), and figured i'd lie down and rest a while and wait for my dad's group to come by and hitch onto their ride. Tagging onto the steppie ride meant they went from 13 to a now-lucky 14, and we had a great ride up southridge to ernie maxwell's. Great climb, and great fun to drop too. Watched gene nearly eat it coming off the steps at the top (gotta lower the seat on those big bikes!), and had ton's o' fun hammering down. Nice job on the der. fix lynn! Then onto the evil southridge climb, which i am unashamed to say i walked a bit of, to meet up with the hippie kids lighting up at the top of southridge..and then the bomber ride down southridge, snakeskin, the new little connector to exfoliator, down exfoliator, and back to camp. Great ride!

Showers and food behind me, beer in hand, shared some great beers from kern river brewing with jeff, scott, and dan of the kernville contingent - thanks guys, great ipa and stout! Wandered my way over to neil's site after a bit (you can't really miss neil arriving), had some of dell's and neil's shots, and commenced to keep everyone in camp up for a while longer that evening with my laugh. Sorry...it's just kinda out of my hands at that point!

Steph and nancy tried to get some payback sunday morning, and got jesse pretty good with the pan banging wake-up...i'd been up reading for an hour though, so you guys didn't get me! Finally got jesse motivated to hit the thomas-ramona ride that everyone else was headingout on, albeit half an hour after everyone else had left! He ended up having a busted rear der. anyway, but ray (who was climbing like mad up thomas sunday) and i headed up with the idea of catching up to steppie's group, and eventually did. Great climb up to thomas, and had lots of fun coming down ramona - glad i made that trail instead of hanging aroung the campground area sunday. That is a seriously fun trail, and i can't wait to get back and ride it again!

Lot of fun hanging out and riding with everyone this weekend! Can't wait for the next one...

Unfortunately a bit short... but imagine pulling into the lot for Ramona Trail. You've got a little guy in your back seat and a bearded fellow hanging out the back of your truck.

Nicely done Liz. Great pics. So glad I was able to ride with you a little when our groups linked up. This past weekend was a lot of fun. Those trails are way too fun.

I think next time we all need name tags and need to mingle more. And dang we should have gotten a group photo! There's too many good folks I didn't meet!

The week-end with the group was beyond phenomenal! I was very nervous about going alone but everyone was just great. I wish I could have met more people like “whatkeepshappening” and Vickie and others but in such a large group, it is so difficult!! I’m sure I met people but I’m so bad with names, I don’t know who you are and I apologize!. Nancy understands!!

First, let me say - it would have been great to meet you too....but as John (keepswhathappens) said, so may people - so little time. It was crazy how many people there were!!!

Now, nervous about going with this group? I would think, now that you met some others, you should be even more nervous next time...

Catch ya on the rebound!

Great stuff....

Everybody has taken some awesome photos....everytime I come back to view this thread there are more and more....and it's making me more and more jealous that I was, and still am on the injured list. I'm heading back when I'm my shoulder is healed up, you can bet on that!

It was a great time for sure camping at Hurkey Creek. Opens your eyes to what is in your backyard, as in SoCal. We have great places to ride.

Also it was great to meet members of the STR crew, it was a pleasure to finally put some faces to the screen names & also to ride with a few of you on Fri & Sat & also kick back around the camp fire.

I will for sure being going back within the next 2 months, before it gets too hot.

I had a blast & look forward to the next ride there.

Oh yeah :steppie: for Pres. Thanks Dean for the map & directions.

Here are some campground photo's, as I left my battery to my MTB camera at home.

Once again great place to ride & also a place where the family can have fun too.

oh man! that looks like so much fun, i've been dying to go camping this year, its been way too long since I mingled around the campfire.

When's the next STR camp trip? I wanna go!!!!
