I went to the The Path bikeshop yesterday, because I am finally going to upgrade from my hardtail to full suspension.

Both of these models are in the $2500 range and I plan on renting both to see what I like more. Do any of you have suggestions for what would be a better bike for what I want.

I enjoy climbing as much as the downhill. I don't plan on taking huge drops. I just want something that will smooth out the trial. The main places I ride are whiting ranch, STT/Luge, and I have been to Aliso once.

    Any comments would be appreciated.

If you climb for any extended period of time, I would go with the Camber. The geo is the same as the Stumpy (trail as opposed to AM). It's heavier than a SJ, but lighter than a Pitch. If I were you, I would look at a SJ Elite. It can be had for $2,500, and the frame and component group exceed the quality of the Camber.

If you are gonna go for the Camber, might just consider a 2010 FSR XC for half of that money. The Camber is a 2011 replacement model for the FSR XC. Just my $0.02.

for 2500 I would get the stump jumper FSR elite with Juicy or elixir, x-9 RD. But then again I would spring for the Enduro for just a little bit more (8>. Oh once you go FS clipless the air is included at no extra cost

Spesh makes way too many models . . . seems like they have a bike for every 10mm of travel. Get whatever you want.

I'd also consider the trance and the reign... maybe talk to mike at fullerton bikes to check out the giants. I have a pitch it's a great bike, it will climb good but not great and it can handle chunk. I consider that bike a jack of all trades. Good at everything but a master of none. Never seen the camber in person but it looks nice. Stumpy's will climb better than the pitch, though the pitch is better on the DH. I would pick a trance or a reign, it's really all personal preference but I like the maestro better than the horst. So many awesome bikes in this category...

I have the Stumpy Elite FSR 2010 and it's great for Climbing and not too bad when descending.
The components are great, with XTR Shadow rear derailleur and Elixir R SL brakes.
Much better IMO than the Camber and much lighter.
    Highly Recommended !

If you are keeping your current bike then I would buy a bike that goes down....maybe you already have a bike that climbs well. I own a light bike but lately I find myself grabbing the 6.5 inch travel AM bike most of the time.

Thanks for the replies. I will rent a few of these models and try them out. I guess that I can put my rentals toward the new bike purchase.

Specialized Pitch. Theres a reason why they continue selling it every single year without changing its geometry...

    ------> And I also ride one. <------

If you like climbing (differentiated from just getting up the hill) then the lighter bike is better which is probably the camber. If you just get up the hill to go fast down hill then again the camber is better. Heavier 150 mm travel bikes are a chore going uphill, i have one. If strong legs then the pitch is the better choice.

For STT/Luge, Whiting, and most of Aliso, the Camber will do fine. However if you see yourself getting into any light downhill or gnarlier trails, get the Pitch. If you are the kind of guy who doesn't mind taking his time on technical spots, instead of blowing through them, it might not be worth it to get the Pitch.

Also check out the Giant Reign and Trance X. The Reign is like the Pitch and the Trance X somewhere between the Pitch and Camber. Both are great bikes and I think they are a better deal than the Specialized bikes.

These two Giant bikes are worth checking out. I went from an 09 Giant Anthem to an 09 Specialized FSR then to an 08 Giant Trance. Like stated earlier in this thread, it's really all personal preference but I like Giant's Maestro design over Specialized's FSR.

I actually missed this bit of your post:

Sounds like the Trance X2 would be right up your alley. The 2010 can probably be had for about the same price as the Camber.

Of the two, I'd say Camber by far. However, you may want to think of the Stumpy FSR Comp. Great bike for the $$$ and a good compliment to your HT.
