I'm looking to buy a road bike, and I got a deal on the table for an '07 Specialized Allez Double Comp for $1350 and no tax (paying in cash). Does it sound like a good deal? Or should I be looking to bargain again to a lower price?

Sounds good to me. You've gotta spend at least a grand to get a decent road bike.

According to the Spec'd website, that bike should go for $1600, so that sounds like a nice deal. FWIW, though, I have the Allez Elite Triple. It's a great bike and I got it for $800. I don't know if this is your first road bike or not, but I think that, all things considered, there's very little difference, performance-wise, between those bikes. It looks like you'd get somewhat better wheels (how much better, I don't know) and a slightly better component group. I have Shimano 105 on my Allez and have had no problems. (I have the 2006 model, so things might have changed).

As always, the greatest factor in the performance of your bicycle is the engine. You might save a considerable amount of money and not notice the difference in bike, is what I'm trying to say. Is the Allez comp better? Yes. Is it $500 better? That's what you need to decide. I've put about 1K miles on my Allez and I love it. Good luck!

Specialized, Trek, Giant. Any one of those manufacturers will deliver a great bike.

Ride 'em and see what fits. Then, pick it by the color. Color is probably the most important aspect of any bike buying decision.

I like my Allez. You'd like it too.

Incycle Bike Shop had '06 Allez Comp's on sale going for $1100. not sure if they may still have some left. (I know they had tons of them). they have full Shimano 105.

I bought one of these; It's a lot of fun to ride.

    Group Deal?

This is my first time buying a road bike as well, and I have for some odd reason have alway been enamored by the Specialized bikes. I saw this particular bike in Bicycling mag as one of the top bikes under $2k. I was sold.

Anyhow, I was thinking if I can round up enough people who want this bike, maybe we could get a volume discount of sorts.

    Anybody interested?

Oh..btw Epic, I called Incycle and the lowest they could go was $1399. The guy said it retailed for $1600 and told me I was getting a good deal with these guys.

Sounds like they are sold out of 06 models because the 07 models are that price, 1600 new right on the spec website. 1399 would be a good price break on a 1600 bike but id shop around regardless you may still be able to find 06 models.

The Roubaix is a lot more "vertical compliant" (it's smoooooooth).

the way I know the breakdown is that the Allez & Tarmac are speed bikes and the Roubaix is a distance bike. so go from there.

Yup you are correct after riding all three. I fell in love with the look of the Tarmac for sure but not the price tag.

I love the Tarmac, but can't see spending the money for it ...yet.

Call me a bike snob (shut up Gurp), but I'm in love with so many of the European bikes. Colnago, Bianchi, Orbea, BMC, Pinerello, and the list keeps growing.

All things considered though to get the best bang for your buck, the Specialized is a great deal.

I'm approaching 25,000 miles on my Giant though and it has been a dream machine. No real problems and outside of the stuff normally wearing out this bike just keeps on going.
