RR: South Fork, San Bernardino Mts.

As part of our ride today, we ended on the SART, but this RR is not about that trail…much has been reported on that trail in the past.

This was a Homer ride, 3 lovely Turners and a lowly puke green rigid steel 29-inch wheeled single speed. Riders were Scott, Lynn, Jose and myself. I have done many rides with Scott this year and this one is up there on the fun and scenic scale. When I ride with Scott I do not bring a map, he leads, I follow and he does not disappoint. Therefore I cannot tell you the name of the trail, just that we started in the Jenks Lake area of the San Bernardino Mountains (Osceola Pine Demo Forest, Alpine Meadows) and came down the South Fork Watershed coming out at the cabins at South Fork Camp Ground.

New dirt: for Jose and I…some new dirt for Scott and Lynn. We found a nice piece of singletrack; it followed a nice little stream with lots water in it...got to the Wilderness Boundary so we turned around. Thanks Jose, we may not have taken that section of trail without your encouragement.

After our most scenic out-n-back, we dropped down South Fork Creek. It is excellent with; rocks, roots, drops, rolls, blind corners, in a beautiful mature forest. To add to the experience we had the sound of falling water all the way down.

Here are a couple of pictures. Hope you all are enjoyin' your weekend.

Dean

That looks awesome. If I wasn't doing Blackstar Sunday I would have gone.

I have a feeling that you may not be seeing Jose tomorrow. He did 26 miles today and is going out tonight. But there again he surprizes me all the time.

Great scenic pics as usual Dean! Thanks for the report, looks like some beautiful trails.

I did a quick singlespeed spin around El Moro today but I am still thinkin' about yesterdays ride. I took a ton of pictures making it tough to pick the ones I want to share.

I got a good picture of Jose surfing. I was scouting/hiking out a steep trail that dropped down into the canyon floor. Jose followed me down on his bike; picture is after he figured out it was too steep and loose to ride.

Turners resting at the end of the trail, they would not let that Monocog in the picture.

So when is Jose getting his Turner?

I've done that lower part a bunch of times with Scott and have rode it with Lynn once or twice too. The downhill is one that I love on the SART more then any other. I use to kind of keep quite about it thinking that it would get swamped with riders, but it's got pretty well known now and is not overly traveled. I'd signed on for a Century ride today and wouldn't have made it there in time yesterday anyways. Damn, I'm still a little let down I didn't ride it. Truth is, I don't think we've ever encountered any other riders on this gem.

Actually Mike, we did not see any other tire marks in Secret Canyon, so I do not think it gets much traffic. The trailhead is easy to find at the bottom, the trailhead at the top you would not find unless someone showed it to you. The rains have changed the trail and Lynn thought it more tech than before.

What was very different we did not run into any other riders while on the SART.

cathy and i are going to big bear this weekend if someone wants to show us this trail let me noive got a house to stay in too.

Dirt and CC, I would love to show you guys the trail just not this weekend. The trail is over by Angelus Oaks close to Big Bear but still a drive.

If you want I can give you directions to ride "Area 51" in Fawnskin, also know as Grout Bay Singletrack. You will also being driving by Exploration Trail in Arrowbear...both get singletracks.

Hey Dean what is your schedule Thur or Friday? We are leaving Thursday morning to go camping so if you are open for a mid week ride this could work out. If that doesn't work, we will have to see about getting directions.

Thanks

We have a cabin in Big Bear to stay in (friends). But may opt to camp one day. If you want to crash there you are welcome to.

Thanks for the overnight offer but I have another ride the next day. Just trying to figure out how to met up with you guys. I am not sure about the cell service in Big Bear.

I was thinking the same thing too. Dean, we can give you a call Thursday morning to see how your weekend plans are shaping up. Then we can try the cell on Friday, if no service, then we will use a landline to confirm.
