A great read from all who posted. I mountain bike. I began road riding one year ago to train for mountain biking. I vowed never to shave. I vowed never to wear lycra. I swore never to wear matching tops and bottoms. I road an S-Works Tarmac SL road bike in mountain biking shoes for two months...then it happened. I have become my worst nightmare...I am LYCRAMAN (with baby smooth get-a-way sticks)
    My racing bro's state -
    - Better healing, less infection potential, less scaring
    - Better massage/rub downs - no hair pulling
    - Little truth (they say) to aerodynamics
I did it. I still don't fall on my road bike (Knock on wood.) So I don't know about healing, the massage statement is spot on, the lack of sensation of the wind hitting your hairs is, to me a form of "mental drag" - I noticed a decrease in sensation ie. temperature, and lack of wind drag. The training has paid off from a strength and speed standpoint. The lack of hair on my legs has lead to puzzled looks from some bro's. Complete and utter bewilderment from my Contractor father-in-law, giggles from the ladies at work (they're jealous:lol:), and a period of abstinence brought upon me by my wife who has boycotted shaving her legs to maintain the Ying-Yang thing. Heck, the curlies grow back so try it. It is a commitment however brief and you will feel part of a freakshow that has many closet members!

    I STILL MOUNTAIN BIKE:D

I've found that Pantene Pro-V Smooth & Sleek conditioner works really well when shaving.

Holy sh*t. I find it incredible that it took so many posts for someone to actualy get it right. I'm glad somebody knows.

It's the trickle down effect: Amateurs copy what the professionals do. It's normal in any sport. Professionals get a massage after the race, and leg hair makes this almost impossible.

In some cases, it does help during a crash. On an elite level, during a time trial, it may cut down on wind resistance a little. On a local/beginner level, I doubt it.

I just love how many insecure freds love to poke fun at cyclists who shave their legs. Kind of like the insecure people at the gym who laugh at cometitive swimmers training in a speedo at the gym pool.

BFlo, it's gonna bug you like a b*tch when it starts growing back at first. Wait a while before you shave again. It takes a while, but eventualy the irritation goes away.

like they say..if ya gotta ask...

Reasons for shaving the ol' cannons:

    1- massage therapy

2- wound care (incl tick, oak etc....)

    3- endorphine response

    4- repsect

No law says you must shave. (unless sponsors say so)

Some circles might expect it. Esp if ya sit on with Elite riders. It's shows commitment, regardless of your level, again- in some circles.

You may be more apt to get a tow or helping hand on a hard group ride if you know the dirlll and show up looking the part. Most high level road rides etc I've been in like it that way. I also do it out of respect for those that have gone before me and made the grade and sacraficed a lot to get there. I've also earned this 'right of passage'.

Yes- there's riders with hairy legs faster than me.
That fact don't bother me a bit.

    I used to..

I used to because I really saw the benefit of not having hair pulling apart all the scabs I got from being a lousy rider. Things just seemed to heal faster. So I thought that was the true benefit, but then I realized that's not the point.

My girlfriend bought a book on massage for cyclists and started giving me proper pre and post-ride massages. A good massage requires the use of a massage lotion or oil to create fluid movement of the hands across the muscles (and sometimes they are medicated to help soothe the muscles). The problem for me was the hair on my legs and arms interfering with that "flow". Also, if you want a massage at the race venue, your skin needs to be clean. It's more difficult to clean hairy skin with a rag or wipes.

Most professional cyclists, especially road guys and XC guys have someone on the support team to provide massage treatments. It's a crucial element in their ability to perform in both the short term and long term. It makes perfect sense to optimize that aspect by shaving.

Yes Brandon, this is true!! However, make sure you don't cut yourself while shaving, because the scabs/scars are ugly and CHICKS DON'T DIG THAT PART!!!!!
