I'm currently on my way home from an awesome family vacation and thought I'd get some pictures in.
First part of the trip was spent at my wife's grandmother's cabin on Pacific Creek Road in the Grand Teton National Park at the Moran entrance. On July 5th, I was able to get in a ride. The plan was to do Black Canyon near the Teton Pass on Hwy 22, but the weather was looking real nasty up there, so we only did Shadow Mountain.
The bottom part of the climb up forest service route 30340 is very powdery and dusty. There must have been some serious partying up there the night before, because about 10 cars came down while we were climbing up. The majority of the drivers were ignorant and would buzz by at 15 MPH or so. The dust was awful. That soon ended, and the road turned to hard pack after the first mile or two. The top of the climb came at 3.6 miles and was at 8250 feet. It was an easy climb of only 1400 feet, but I wasn't able to hammer it because I wasn't used to the elevation. The views of the Tetons were spectacular. It is only 11 miles, as the crow flies, from the top of our climb to the Grand Teton. There is a also a picture of Mount Moran and the Wall at Avalanche Canyon in there too.
The singletrack down was amazing. Short, but amazing. The first .5 miles of it snaked through a wildflower filled meadow. It was so beautiful, I couldn't stop laughing while riding. The last 2.1 miles sent you down through the aspens, firs, and pines. It was a total blast. There were a few sections where people created a second singletrack right next to the first. That really IRRITATES me when corners are cut, so I stopped and would pile up branches and other such obstacles on the inside track. The last mile was spent on a dirt road with an ever so slight downhill grade back to the trucks.
My wife's cousin had to go back to Utah, so I stayed around and did a second loop.
Here's a link to the .GPX file. LINK Right click and Save As. For some reason these .GPX files like to save as .XML files, so you'll need to rename as a .GPX. Open it up with Google Earth.
For you geoladders users, there's a route to look at as well. http://www.geoladders.com/show_route.php?route=1285
