Sea Otter 2008 Chronicles

To those of you who made it to Sea Otter this year, it was great to see everyone and congratulations to all who competed!!!!

After a 4 year hiatus, we decided (with no rain in the forecast) to make another sojourn to the Sea Otter. This year I have taken a liking to Dual Slalom so I borrowed a bike (Foes 4x) and off I went . To solidify my addiction I also signed up for the www.bikeskills.com DS clinic with Rich Houseman and Kurt Vories on Thursday. During the clinic, Steve Peat and Nathan Rennie showed up and I promptly introducted myself. They replied with "What can we help you with???". So I got tips from 4 pros and ended up qualifying 1st much to my surprise! I ended up with 2nd overall in a field of 6 women in the Expert Women class. My competitors ranged from 19 to 39. And to top it off, I got my picture on the front page of the local newspaper and was included in a slideshow with audio on the paper's website http://extras.montereyherald.com/slideshows/seaotter0418/index.html!!! I think this was the highlight of my 6 year racing career!!!

The downhill course seemed faster than ever and was very fun. I had chainguide issues in the last 1/3 of my run so my time was 3:19 which could have been better (however it was much faster than 2003 4:05 and 2004 4:03), but I brought home a winner's jersey and some great swag anyway.

And then there was the ever persistent Roger who keeps getting faster and faster who ended up 2nd in the Expert Men 55+ DH class. He only needed to make up 4 seconds for the win!!!!

Great weekend, we missed those of you who didn't make it!!!!

P.S. I have photos that I will upload later.......

I've got plenty of pics (2008 Sea Otter champs & podium finishers) and a full Sea Otter report that i'll post after work this evening. We got home around 6ish last evening and just wanted a *real shower* and some time out of the wind.

One thing I can say is:

This was by far the best time I've ever had at Sea Otter! Great to spend time with friends and just doing what we love best riding & racing!

Sea Otter Virgins

This was Greg and my first participation at Sea Otter. After a lot of talk from our friend about the event, we decided it would be a good opportunity and exposure to the MTB scene.
We were fairly well prepared for the XC Sport class ride but were NOT prepared for the cold and windy conditions Saturday morning. The temperature at the parking lot was 44° and wind gusts in the upper 20’s. In my book, cold is for snow skiing and wind is for windsurfing.
For being a novice at the event, we were able to decipher the map and the starting area with minimal effort. Greg found his starting group while I made a few laps around trying to keep loose and warm. When my group was gathering, it was apparent I may be in for more than I bargained for; several of these women were very serious!
After the start, winding our way up the paved race course I settled into my place – towards the back – and remembered what I promised myself: HAVE FUN and DON’T BE LAST.
Greg and I both finished – not last – and were too whooped to wander the booths. Headed back to the room for a hot, hot shower and a nap. Sunday’s weather was much better for checking out the latest trends and gear.
All in all it was an experience and I’m glad I did it. Congrats to all the STR group who placed!
This event made me appreciate the camaraderie of the STR group rides – always a challenge with the support of your peers.

Did anyone go to the premier of Seasons? If so, spill it!!! My inquiring mind wants to know!!

Probably the most talented rider I know (and as nice as the day is long). Absolute mad skills and his fitness is off the hook (especially) the last couple years. Good to hear he did well. Thanks for sharing that.

Bobby is not human....i used to ride with him during lunch (I work at same company) on occassion and a couple other times....he has to be on some sort of "juice" the way he rides :)
