Good luck to all ya racers heading to the Otter. Be sure to send back some pics for us on the IR, and those who must work/family, so we can imagine being there.

Weather looks to be good but I would still bring a spare set of mudders juuuust in case;) 'cause it can get slick quick.

    Packet Pick Up Q

    :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

I'd swear I read somewhere -- either here or at the SO site -- that you may not pick up your packet on the same day you are regged to race. Am I making that up? Packet pick up is open 6AM-6PM Thu, Fri and Sat, and then 6AM-11AM on Sun.

Does anyone know for sure whether or not I can pick up our packets on Friday if we are racing on Friday?

    :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

Someone else told me that too, but I never found anything that said that. All I saw was you may not register on the same day of your race.

You cant register the same day.

    From Site
I just passed Gee Atherton doing a road ride. Road bike and bucket helmet. (must have learned from his sister, he had a helmet and was on the correct side of the road)

^^ Okay, maybe I just misunderstood. :bang:

Soooo, I guess we are driving up tomorrow (Thursday), then will pick up packets on race day (Friday), and do our races that afternoon. Works for me!

Can't wait. I will also be up there attempting to shoot the Liquid Fitness road team during at least one of their races. I just shot them last weekend out at Mugu Rock south of Oxnard (on PCH).

^^ You're making the same mistake I made, Brandon. I get that it isn't clear, but it seems you just can't REGISTER for your race on the same day, but packet pickup is okay (which makes sense after all -- I just misunderstood, I think...).

Gearing for SS XC at Sea Otter

I'm racing for the first time at Sea Otter (actually my 1st MTB race) and am riding in the Single Speed category.

Has anyone some advice for me on potential gearing?

If you might be able to relate the terrain to some local trails this would help me select a gear..

Basically I'm thinking about running 34x18 on my 26" rigid bike and I'm wondering if I'm crazy.....

I know many are already up there.
I am staying at the sea otter in, and hopefully we can all plan an STR get together at like Bubba Gump's or something.
What would be ideal is an STR Ez up/ or something like that, but i dont think there is one.
Hope to see everyone up there tomorrow evening, and good luck nancy and whoever else practices today.

Impy may have some more insight (or someone else on SS?!?!).

I rode SS a couple years ago; if you're strong, you won't have much difficulty with the climbs and the rest is pretty flat/slight dh.

I'm not very strong, had a 32-21 on a 29'er and was okay.

    SS Gearing

Gearing at Sea Otter is the key. If you are racing cat 2 and below ( 1 lap ) than go for broke with a super hard gear 32(34)-16 ( 26r ). For 2 laps maybe a little more conservative. If you can grunt for a while while on the fireroad climbs than go for a big gear. When you first start your lap you will be on the road for a mile or so. If you are undergeared the pack will leave you behind. Sea oOtter is a pretty roady style course. But the wind on the back side can really beat you up. GOOD LUCK:bang:
