the rent-a-cop is only there for this weekend......tomorrow Irvine park will be filled to capacity, so they have a security guard wandering around this weekend only.

next weekend he will not be out there.

So what's the verdict? Where are the I-don't-want-to-pay-for-parking guys parking now when riding Oaks?

If you're going to pay $3, why not just park at Irvine Park right in front of the trail entrance?

Used to park up at Albertson's because it was easier to meet friends for rides.

Now it forced me to make adjustments and ride 3.5 miles to the park.

I will ask again, since it has been several weeks.....

Anybody have thier car towed yet by parking there?

    Or

Is it just a scare tactic to keep us from parking there?

I am sure the merchants over atthe Ranch Market Center on Newport are loving the increase in business from everyone that has begun parking over there.

I've been parking there last few times. Owner of Fish House Taco seems to be cool with it, especially since we've been eating there afterwards.

I spent 10 minutes writing emails to Taco Bell, Albertson's, and Chevron letting them know that while I cannot park there, I will be going out of my way to not shop at those stores. There always plenty of room in that parking lot for cyclists and store patrons - I vote we use to the power of our wallets to let them know that we will spend our money elsewhere as long as the signs and property owner's hostile attitude towards cyclists remain.

i haven't been back either. i have a feeling those places might be losing business as a result of the signs. we used to hit taco bell once in awhile after a ride at the oaks, same with john's. that chevron/subway was awesome for taking pre-ride dumps in too.

went today and the sandberg lot was caution taped off with no parking signs. the thing is they all looked suspect. all the cones and the "saw horse" things all had different markings on them like they were all randomly sourced. none of them said oc parks or oc sherriff or anything official looking. they had just home depot run of the mill caution tape. also the signs on the "saw horses" were very homemade looking. me thinks the residents didnt want people parking there for memorial weekend. the whole setup looked fishy to me. i didnt test it cuz i didnt want to end up with slashed tires or something like that. but i bet the stuff is gone soon and its back to normal. that is NOT private property!

I was at the end of Sandberg last Thurs and no tape, no nothing. Cars w/MTB'ers and cars w/horse trailers.
I and some friends are planning on being there tomorrow evening.
As mentioned earlier, a friend of mine lives on Sandberg - I'll see if I can get more info from him.
Looking at the official OC Parks map shows that as a dirt parking lot within the borders of the park.
PS If you see a couple of teenage girls walking goats out there - they are probably my stepdaughter and friends. (And who doesn't see goats every day?)

Santiago Oaks - No Parking in Dirt Lot at end of Sandberg Lane

Ever wonder if it's okay to park in the dirt lot at the end of Sandberg Lane / near the base of the Villa Park Dam? I know I have.

Unfortunately it's not okay. Sandberg Lane is a private road and is posted as such. The dirt lot is not part of Santiago Oaks, it's a flood buffer zone. Not a parking lot.

    Thanks for your cooperation.

New post on the OC Parks website:
" In recent weeks there has been much confusion and misinformation regarding the dirt lot at the end of Sandberg Lane. Due to complaints received regarding increased vehicle traffic, dust and noise, please note the following:

    1) The dirt lot is not part of Santiago Oaks Regional Park and is not designated as an authorized parking area. The parcel is owned and operated as a flood buffer zone below the Villa Park dam spillway by OC Flood Control Division.

    2) Sandberg Lane is a private road (noted on street sign) that is owned and maintained by the homeowners in the area. Repairs from excessive vehicle traffic will be at their expense.

    3) The temporary barricades were recently put in place by County personnel to dissuade vehicles from parking in the area.

We are relying on park users to assist us in resolving this matter. We encourage use and enjoyment of the park, but want to prevent disruption to the residents. Please help us be good neighbors."
