I was told today that Chilao in the San Gabes held up very well and only a few slides on the fireroad climb. Chantry and Winter Creek were very wet and had loads of damage. If they'd open the Gabes we'd have plenty to ride.

Just rode UWC/LWC this morning. Excellent conditions except the tream crossings. Each crossing was a log and boulder hopping puzzle. Watch out for new, newly exposed, and slick exposed rock.

San Gabes/Mt. Wilson singletrack

Provided it doesn't rain, I'd like to ride mt. wilson toll road to mt. wilson singletrack....anyone out there have updated post-storm info. on condition of this trail?
thanks for any help!

I rode to Mt. Wilson on New Year's Eve via Chantry and Upper Winter Creek. There are a couple of new trees down on UWC, 2 on the wilson trail. There's a couple of slides, but a "trail" has already been built over the larger one. There's a very large chest-sized rock on the trail as well. For the most part Wilson trail is in good shape with just a couple of sections that are a little bit narrower than they were before the last storms. It was a great ride. I had been told that the Pinecrest gate was closed because of landslides on the toll road again, though I wasn't able to verify this.

FYI.......Access to the Mt Wilson Toll Rd via the Pinecrest gate was still closed as of 7:30 AM today

Pic of recent storm repair on upper slide that was taken on 12/31/2010 by a friend who hiked in through Eaton Canyon. No bikes are allowed in Eaton Canyon below the Toll Rd bridge.

Agreed. The sign on the gate stated that the Fire Dept closed it due to unsafe conditions. With that, a sign at the entrance on Altadena (across from Roosevelt) stated that hiking the Mt. Wilson Toll Road was not recommended. So based on that I guess it's still ok to hike up it just not ride it.

I honestly can't wait to see this gate taken down. It looks like a prison with all the razor wire on it. A local told me (yesterday) they need to keep the gate up as a murder deterrent. Apparently there were three murders that occurred there before the gate was put in. Yes, I asked him if he was serious. He explained to me that most murderers are lazy and would rather just not kill someone rather than drag the body all the way down the other existing entrances. I asked if it wouldn't be more prudent to convince the would be victim just walk down and then kill them. He then asked me if I was some kind of sicko.

I just got word that the Toll Road is open today. I haven't confirmed it, but will probably find out this afternoon or tonight.

Mt. Wilson Toll Road

FYI, the upper segment of Wilson Toll Road, between Mt. Harvard and Mt. Wilson is closed till March due to Transmission Line construction between the two peaks.

Not a big deal for us, you can still hit the peak via the upper singletrack. Here's some pics of the closure.

From the point in the pic...where would you catch the singletrack to the peak? I like to do this from time to time....warm up to Henninger and back down...then all the way up to the top, but I have never done anything other than the fireroad.

The singletrack leads off to the right (can't see it in the pic) just before the closure. The trail is unmarked but it goes all the way to Wilson Peak.

I plan to ride this for the first time. Exactly where is the closure? I can't seem to find the singletrack on the google satellite view.

Please help, I don't want to get lost!

I just did the Mt. Wilson toll road climb to Winter Creek single track descent yesterday and the entire Winter Creek Trail is in awesome shape (as long as you don't take the ridge top route with the jumps, as that is super rutted out). As for the road closure, it's about a mile past (further up) the trail junction between Upper Winter Creek and Mt. Wilson toll road. The sign said it was closed, but I talked to a crew working there and they let us ride on up to the top via the toll road, so we could take that upper part of the single track back down. If you can't go up the fire road, the single track is literally right behind that trail map sign that Roach posted... you CANT miss it. Have fun!!!

is sturtevant trail open down to chantry?

i heard it might be closed? does anyone know for sure?:)
