Okay guys and gals I think I finally talked my roomate into getting a bike and hitting some light trails atleast. He doesnt wanna spend over like $800 though so its a hardtail for sure. Right now we are looking at the Specialized Hardrock. I know this price range is not what most of us are looking around in but any thoughts? He doesnt want to build anything and doesnt want to buy used. He would like a full sus bike but really needs to atleast get over $1000 budget to do so.

Also, I dont think he is going to be getting into any real tough riding for a while. Mostly flat trails and some road mixed in mainly easy stuff. Ofcourse, in several months time who knows!

Any thoughts would be helpful.

P.S. Thanks for the warm wishes on my Mother. She is doing better its just been touch and go since her heart attack and every now and then she needs a little extra time spent with her son and daughter. Sorry I have had to pull out of some rides.
 
Ironhorse Warrior Race - check google, I've seen them for under $800 with a pretty good parts spec

VooDoo HooDoo - I love steel bikes, it feels livelier. I'm not sure how much it costs, but I got mine for $470 5 yrs ago.

and I wouldn't recommend such a rig for someone that is just getting into the sport.

Jordan... take a look at the Trek HTs - Alph Alum series. They look pretty decent
 
Thanks everyone for the hits! I also think Ross' bike is a little much for him right now but I think I might have another buyer for that bike! We are going to do some shopping this week and will be looking for a few more models since this post. Grassy ass!

I was looking into getting a specialized hardrock as well. Maybe if we buy 2 we can get a better deal??

While on the topic of hardrocks, how well would they hold up to some mild 200lber jumping? (not huge doubles just some hips and rolling singles...and does anyone have any experience with one?

The reason I had him looking at hardrocks is that I have an older hard tail hardrock in the garage right now I used to ride. It needs some TLC and isnt the right size for him since he is 6'3". I used to do just about everything with that hardrock from trails to urban street stuff to some decent jumps and its always held up. Specialized makes great bikes.

that is good to hear! Im going to be looking at bikes this week as well... My budget is a bit lower than his though, im hoping to be around 350 for a bike. I just bought a new car so money is tight...
a LBS by my moms said the Hardrock sport was 320, whichwasnt too bad. I rode the Hardrock sport disc and wasnt too impressed withthe stopping power of the disc... maybe they just didnt have enough tension? im not sure. im a newbie
keep us updated! if he is closer to my range maybe we can haggle the shop to get a better deal since we would buy 2 bikes
 
the cheapo disc brakes are'nt worth the money you spend,v-brakes/linear pull werk better in my opinion.for arond 650 you can get a specialized h/r pro w/ avid bb5 discs and a good parts spec.,or go up to the rockhopper w/ better stuff.cannondales r400 around 750 is a good bike w/the head shock,stout frame ok parts spec.hope this helps.
 
Ok, so I was reading thoroughly about the Iron Horse Warrior SE and the Spec Hard Rock Pro Disc. The HR definitely has better components all around and is lighter but lacks rear suspension. What do you guys think? Let him ride the better hardtail or get him into a full sus right away?

not to bust on yO game but I heard low end Iron Horse bikes have issues all da time!! and this was from a good friend bub!!8-[

thats the kinda stuff i wanna hear about. right now im leaning towards the spec hardrock ht just because i know spec bikes are always pretty nice. would love to get him on something with full suspension but he doesnt want to spend the money
 
though a bit more based on retail pricing, perhaps a good shop can give a good deal....a good bike for under $1000 for a taller rider

As others have noted, the Iron Horse Race. here is a 2006 that is not ebay, from a good shop for only $649 which is a very good price in my opinion. At least based on pull down menu, looks like lots of sizes.

or I would consider used. here are some examples that may fit. not sure if he needs a typical large or XL though...perhaps he could try one new and see if the size works....could probably haggle on top of it so price would likely be cheaper than posted of course.

what are the problems though? Only part that is Iron Horse on something like the Iron Horse Race is the frame....so unless the frame is cracking I would not worry about it. I personally have heard good things about higher end Iron Horse stuff.....also, I have seen cracks in Turner and Ventana....any bike has both good and bad publicity.

A bunch of my budd's back in tejas ride HT's. Seems that Giant and Specialized give you lots of bike for the buck. A good frame with a decent load-out. Should be able to find a good HT with a ~$800 budget.

In my opinon, you can always upgrade a few of the crappier components as they wear out if rest of the bike is worth upgrading. And if the bug bites hard, he could sell the HT and get a FS, hold onto as a decent second ride, or convert to SS...
 
yeha its an 04 big hit spec white Large

it has a small stock fork on it but its soon to have a new fork on account of me gettin a monster soon then it will receive my shiver dc

ill sell it for around a G with the shiver
 
check out the gary fisher opie, i rode one today and it felt really good. I am 5'10 200lbs and the 17inch felt nice. But that is more for jumping and tricks so I think 19 would be better for me.. (so the guy at the store said)
