RR: Rainbow Rim Trail, Grand Canyon

North Rim, AZ. Elevation 8500ft
Rainbow Rim Trail, Kaibab National Forest.

I had never been to the Grand Canyon before, so I called The Grand Lodge on the North Rim and took advantage of a cancellation they had. The trip and stay at the Lodge was excellent.

The trail by its self it not worth the drive, even when you get to the North Rim you have another 18 miles of dirt forest service roads to get to the RRT trailhead. North Rim Grand Canyon is an out of the way destination, it is a must do lifetime experience. I can find better trails in Flagstaff and save 5 hours of driving from Prescott. From North to South the trail is 18 miles long and follows five different figures that protrude out in the Grand Canyon, the only legal bike trail with canyon views. You get a brief view at the tip of each finger then you are back in the forest again following another wash to the next view. I rode half the ride as an out and back doing 15 miles and climbed 500ft. Yes 500 ft, they went to great measures to keep this trail as flat as possible. Don’t get me wrong if you are out on the North Rim hit this trail and the surrounding forest are incredible. I stopped counting the Mule Deer and heard numerous Elk calls. No standing or running water so no bears…big cats yes.

Arizona puts California to shame on trail maintenance. I am riding trails that are literally out in the middle of nowhere and the trails are better maintained the Orange County local parks. Dead falls cleared, trails marked with mileage to next junction, no trash, and endless miles of erosion free buff single track. It is obvious what is important to the voters in Arizona.

Pics: Found a old fire lookout tower to climb and rain into a hail storm on the way back to Prescott.

Nice pics D. Sometimes the scenery makes the ride more enjoyable than the trail.

Also - Thanks for the advice on Prescott trails. I rode 305. Sorry we couldn't hook up to ride this time.

Once again, I am jealous of you Dean. I hate you. I mean that in the friendliest way .

305 is a fast trail coming back down.

Yeah, I agree with CalEpic. The appeal of that trail has to be that it's at the Grand Canyon. Personally, I find that area and that landscape beyond beautiful. I loved the day and night I spent on the South Rim. You're such a trail snob, though, Dean. ;) Sometimes it's just about being on the bike, on the dirt, where you're at that counts. I'd ride there anytime.

North Rim puts the South Rim to shame...it is all about the forest on the North Rim and 3 million yearly vistors South to 400k North.

I know I am a horible trail snob. My point was that this trail takes a long time to get to, not that the trail is by any means bad...it is pristine.

I know, I understood. I was just funnin' ya. You could also say that you are not necessarily a trail snob, you just are discriminating and you know a good trail when you see it. Me? I'm a trail whore. I like 'em all. Fireroad, singletrack, doubletrack. Of course, I prefer them not to be rutted down the middle from motorcycles and it's nice when they are pocked with sharp rocks to slash my sidewalls or bash my pedals. Okay, so I can be a bit, er, discriminating too.

great pics D - once agin if you find you way in sedona week before labor day hit me for a ride together.

We did the same last year. We stayed in St George UT ( are base of operations), then made all the nat'l parks including this gem. I agree I love the North Rim a lot more then the south, but both are worth making vacation plans for. Funny we hit a lot of hail coming back to UT from the north rim. Probably the hardest I've ever seen it come down. We were above 8,000 feet and almost to Navajo Lake. The days up to that trip we hit Zion and all the others in South UT.But my favorite was Bryce.
