Ride Report Push-a-Kona V

It's strange how quickly the pain of all that climbing and frigid temperatures fades away and is replaced with fond memories. Thanks for the epic ride Crash. BTW the T-shirts are dope!

cold?

For those PAK riders complaining about the cold last Sunday. This is what us WA guys came home to on Monday. The pic is the backyard out my kitchen window. Guess I'll go on a crunchy ride this weekend. :)

Maxwell,
Thanks again for putting this great ride together. I didn't think it was possible to actually have fun climbing that much in a day. Upper 3/4's of Coldwater was a blast. The thick layer of leave on the trail made for an almost floating sensation. I don't think my brake pads were really liking the bit after the hike-a-bike. Even with big rotors I was accelerating into some of those tight turns at the bottom of the chutes. What was great about the final stretch was that I could see a good chunk of it from across the gorge and get my heckle on.
Next time I think I'll bring some warm clothes. The windbreaker just wasn't cutting it. I was so cold by the end of Main Divide prior to dropping in on Trabuco. To stay warm I put my hood on, then my helmet. It was very weird because it muffled the noise of my tires, so I could judge who my tires were drifting. Then about a minute in my hands and feet went completely numb. I tried to keep all my fingers on the bars on sections to keep them warm, but that got pretty scary. The heated grips on my moto have definitely spoiled me. I'm bummed that I took off so soon towards Trabuco after finishing ITT, but I think if I would have stuck around any longer I would have not had a good experience down Trabuco. I still can't believe that you guys did it an hour+ after I did.
You can go ahead and add me to the list of people for the ride next year. Also keep me in the loop about that ride you told me about in the shop today. If it's going to be on a Thursday or Saturday I'm in.

Bill,
If you're reading this, thanks for the care package today. Those apples and peanut butter were great. Also I can't believe that I was bitching about the weather when you're riding in the snow. Southern California has turned me into a cold weather pansy.

To everybody else it was great riding with you and meeting many new people. Also bid thanks to Neighbor Tim, Papi Burton, and Bob (surprised to not see your dog as well) for bringing us supplies. The little sugar things you guys made were great. I unfortunately kept myself away from the tequilla. Pretty sure if I would have had a shot it would have just come back out a mile or so latter on ITT.

Thanks Sanjay!!

It's the stories from this ride (and all of the other PushaKona rides) that keep me motivated to put this little shindig on every year.

Number 6, here we come!! :bang::bang::bang:

Maxwell, as everyone has said this was an awesome ride and it was a pleasure to join the gang for my first PAK! Thanks for the great planning, picking a great route, and an awesome t-shirt!!! I'll be planning on making the next one for sure

P.S. The guys who rode that last chute where my bike is getting handed down, kudos to you that was tough to stand up on not to mention the turn at the bottom...you're kahones are bigger than mine :bang:

Hey Richie, it was great having you along.
It's great to hear the reaction someone fairly new to the area has, about our local sustained up's and down's.

Long live long rides!!:bang:

Better late then never?

More pics. ;)

Some of us started the ride from the end Trabuco road... and we were at the back of the pack from the start.

HJ switchback

Before too long we caught up with Mike, Ken and Jeff fixing Jeff's chain. After about another 8 hours of riding Jeff was wishing he hadn't been able to fix it.

Wait...

Donkey has a bike that meets Push-a-Kona's weight standards?! ;)

I love donkey, but he cheated.

I may be calling a kettle black, as I was a few grams under the weight limit. He was pounds under though.

We first thought Sultz was the winner of the solid tubes, with his bike weighing in at28 lbs or so.

Then Blair showed up on his 26 lb 29'er, and got Sultz off the hook. I'm sure we could've stretched them to fit the 29'er, but then Tani showed up, and we weighed his Ventana in at 29.5 lbs. So, in all "fairness" we put the solid rubber tubes away. We got a great laugh on the look of Sultz, and Blairs faces, when they thought they had to ride with those tubes!:lol:
