Ride Report Push-a-Kona V

Did anyone happen to see the sky while coming down trabuco? It was pretty dark coming down, so everything in my immediate line of sight was in grayscale. Off in the distance I could see red-orange clouds and a blue sky. pretty cool to see. i should have been paying attention to the trail as i almost ate it while enjoying the view. my toes were frozen by then as well.

Yeah, it was a great sunset. I remember thinking "If my feet weren't so frozen, I'd be enjoying this".

PushaKona 5 = Why I RIDE!

As I sit here this morning, watching the rain come down, I know that I'm a very lucky man......

The reason I do this ride was very clear yesterday. It brings out riders of all kinds. Friends that I have made over the 10 years that I've been riding my mountain bike.
XC guys, single speeders, DH'ers, all of them just plain ol' MTB'ers like me.

I want to thank all of you that came out and shared the pain, and rewards of my ride.
And please, don't feel left out if you didn't know about the ride. I didn't post it because I knew the route would not be for everyone, and I didn't want to take the risk of somebody being left up on the mountain, or ending up with the feeling that maybe the long rides aren't for you. They are, if you work your way into them. Everybody need's to get out on a good long ride, and get out of your comfort zone every now and then.

The offical PushaKona 5 route;

UP Holy Jim to Main Divide
UP Main Divide to Upper Holy Jim
DOWN Upper HJ to Coldwater
DOWN Coldwater to Indian Truck Trail
UP Indian Trauck Trail to Main Divide
Across (up & down) Main Divide to Trabuco
DOWN Trabuco to the cars

Distance - 30.35 miles
Elevation gain - 8918ft
Elevation loss - 8864ft
Ride time - 9:24
Moving time - 6:49

Here's the MotionBased link - http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/episode/view.do?episodePk.pkValue=7289802

I also want to throw out a BIG THANKS to Jason at the Tustin Brewery for paying for the shirts, and Ron Lund of Mayhem Industries Apparel for designing them!
And to Pat, Tim, and Bob for bringing out the water and pasteries!

I won't go into a long story about the ride, I'll just put some captions under the pictures.

Thanks again guys for making this the BEST PushaKona to date!

I'm really gonna have to step it up a notch for next year!!

I'll have a full post with pictures, here in a little while.

I ended up taking 75 pics, so I need to go through them, then I'll get'em posted.

Thanks for putting the ride together Darin, that was a hell of a lot of fun! :bang:We certainly couldn't have lucked out better on the weather.

And if the TBC post ride party wasn't so much fun I might not still have Chris's camera (donated by Winston :)), with the 150 pictures on it that I took. Too bad the download cable is at Chris's place in the LBC. Doh! ](*,) #-o :D

how heavy was the heaviest bike?

Ken just edged out the other guys with just under 41 lbs. But had the FOCer's been there at 7:30 while the scale was up, they would had given him a run for the money!
My Stinky weighed in at 41.7lbs. Then Ken made me take the water bottle off, and it dropped to 39.8lbs!

I think out of the 29(?) riders that showed, we had at least 6 bikes over 39lbs! :bang:

had fun, i think!always a challenge when darrins involved.coldwater is the shit.someone has to be last, thinks kenton and mike for hangin with me on divide.trabuco in the dark is great.p.s. thinks for the smokes geranimo.

If there's one thing to say about this ride is that it was COLD! But oh so much fun, thanks to the support crew Bob, Tim, and Pat at ITT, the sugar was much appreciated. Hammergel and clif bars may keep you going but sugar with chocolate was the perfect treat at that point in the ride.

ITT was what ITT always is an unrelenting climb, I rode with Richie for awhile before he pulled away and then I was on my own so I just kept turning the cranks and eventually made my way to the top of ITT. However toward the top I heard someone coming up behind me...who could it be? Well it was Shannon, one of those FOC'ers pedaling up behind me, he and I would finish at the top of ITT with Danno coming not far behind.

This is where it got really cold, so I put on all my warm clothes and ate the last remnants of food in my pack as Sanjay rolled out toward Trabuco. Rich followed him about two minutes later, and I followed Richie about five minutes after that, preferring to pedal rather than become a popsicle. This was the point in the ride where my own private hell began...By the top of the wall I began to cramp...badly. I managed to get off my bike without turning into a broken cramped pretzel of a man and managed to stretch out the effected muscle groups (which was pretty much everything) as I searched my pack for anything that might help...low and behold I found two unnoticed, unassuming Enduralyte tablets, which I swallowed. About two minutes later I was back on the bike and pedaling.I managed to grind out the main divide mostly in my middle ring and before long I was passing West horsethief on my way to Trabuco...

Richie apparently had a bad bonk moment around East Horsethief (I'll let him chime in about that...after all it's his tale to tell), so I was apparently about 2 minutes behind him at Trabuco.

The main divide is a long lonely place when you're on you own, so Trabuco was a welcome sight. The decent was mostly in shadow on the was down, major kudos to those brave souls who did this in the dark...I arrived at the Holy Jim trailhead to find Sanjay waiting for the group. He let me know that Richie had just taken off down the wash toward where we had parked early in the morning. I caught him just before we hit the end of the wash...and we both agreed that it was truly an epic day.

Thanks Maxwell  can't wait to see what's in store next year 8-[

Short Coldwater Video

Hey guys, here's a short clip from the first steep section of Coldwater.
I put the camera on after reaching the top of the big hike-a-bike, and left it on until the bottom.
I got some pretty good video, but YouTube says the second was is too long, at just over 14 minutes. :?:
So here's me following Tani down the first steep.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJXMRj16_jc

The audio is pretty funny. I never realized how much I grunt, and talk to the voices while going downhill, before I started getting the video thing going.

Enjoy, and have a good laugh!

Another PAK in the books. Wow, it even has its own TLA (Three Letter Acronym) now! I'm impressed, must be the nationwide status. From my Washington state perspective it was a blast meeting everyone and riding trails where we could actually see off into the distance. Not being frozen and not riding in snow in December was a treat too. I know my other WA friends Kevin and Doug had a great time too, even with some of the yelling and praying on Coldwater. By the way, thanks to Doug, Andy and Jon and Brett helping hand my bike down the shute. And thanks to all you who didn't laugh too hard at me on the sections I ass-slid to get down. Sucks to have blown-out knees, you don't miss your ACL's until they're gone.

Thanks to Pat, Tim and Bob for the moral support and water at the rest stop.

The ITT and Divide climbs were tough, but the Trabuco descent was its usual awesome self. Glad we crossed the wash with just enough daylight to see the big rocks. But I sure couldn't feel the brake levers on the way down, and completely lost the handlebars at one point when switching from one to two fingers on the front brake. Woo hoo, that was exciting.

TBC beer and pizza sure tasted good.

Thanks for the place to sleep while there Maxwell. Let us northwesterners know when the next &*%##@ Pushakona *&$#@ fun *%@#$ ride is. We'll be there.

Bill
