Sunday was the 5th annual Push-a-Kona. Huge prop's to Maxwell for doing such a great job, yet again!!! :bang:

My morning started before dawn, picking up Jon Kearley. As we drove to the Holy Jim wash we noticed the skies turning a soft pink and light blue. It looked like the day was going to be a beauty! We also noticed the temp reading in at 38 degrees! As we got to the trailhead the temp dropped another 4 degrees. It was cold riding in on the Trabuco wash. Donkey, Jon and I rode in to the inner parking lot to meet up with the rest of the guys. On the way in we saw a Jaguar attempting to drive in. :-k It was Mutz. He turned around and decided it would be best to simply ride in as well.

Once we got to the inner parking lot we saw some t-shirts being handed out, shots tossed around and bikes being weighed in. I believe the heaviest bike weighed in at 41 lbs.

Soon the climb began. Holy Jim was pretty uneventful (I believe) and eventually everyone regrouped at the Main Divide. Up to Upper Holy Jim we go. Most everyone road the Main Divide. Jon and I rode (please read as walked and rode) up Upper HJ. Again we regrouped at the top. Soon bones were thawing out. The sun was shining and the wind was minimal.

Now comes the fun. Coldwater!!! The Path boys could be heard yelling and screaming as they descended ahead of us. The boys from Washington could be heard yelling and praying ahead of us. 8-[ The switchbacks are in great shape thanks to the Warrior's Society. I did a high-side when my bike followed the trail to the right, but my body went straight. Ow well. Jon did the big drop at the botton 3 times. The first was great, the 3rd was great, the second... well needed some work. :bang: He ended up with a broken spoke.

We watched the others come down and soon it was time to start IT2 (Indian Truck Trail) Donkey, 1x1Clyde, Mutz, Brett and myself took our shots of Tequila and started the beast. Special thanks to our aid station boys (and a special pre-happy birthday to Pat.) It was endless miles of constant pain. Donkey was kind enough to trackstand and wait for my sorry butt, but eventually we all got to the top.

From there we had a decision to make. It was now 2pm and it would be getting dark before too long. We were sure several of the riders would be heading down in the dark. We opted to give the rest of the riders a bail out point. We decided to head to Holy Jim instead of Trabuco. For you see,if we headed to Trabuco, everyone would have to follow, otherwise they would be the less'er man. We took that mental anguish from you. We didn't want to,but we thought it would be best. We did it for the team!! My ride finished just before 4pm.

Neil would be kind enough to offer us a ride to the cars in a warm truck instead of riding out!! Neil... you rock... oh and the beers were pretty good too!

I was unable to attend the festivities at The Tustin Brewery. #-o I was already a few hours late for a wedding reception so I had to take off.

HUGE thanks to T-brew for sponsoring this event and a GIANT thanks to Maxwell for everything!!!

We took it slow up ITT but cranked it out on MD. I think it was Crash, Geronimo, Joel and myself that descended Trabuco last. We still had some light but it was dark by the time we got to the creek crossing. Oh yeah, it was cold, very cold.

Again, thanks to Darin for doing such a great job putting this thing together. Also, thanks to the guys at the aid station. The water and fudge was great but the Tequila saved the day, especially since we were out of Bourbon .

Nice write up Andy and thanks for the birthday wishes. I'm happy to support you all. I mean, if I didn't my other choice would have been to ride it.

I hate Kentonn

I could have saved myself from the pain if I just let my broken chain stop me. Ken was kind enough or evil enough, I choose to believe, to fix my chain twice and let me continue on. Coldwater was worth it though and am glad I made the journey. Nice work Maxwell, and thanks again Ken for the bike repairs.

come on Pat, you know you would have hated it

That was a fun ride, I think?
The rigid Retrotec was most likely not the best choice for the ride but my other option was my Slope Style and with Nam's bday festivities the night before...I went with the Retrotec.
Ken and Mike kept my buzz going with 7:30 am Bourbon shots- thanks guys!- and right around 8am up we went.
Like Andy said, pretty uneventful just in cruise control until I got a slow leak on the rear tire and since I did not want stop I just nursed it up to Main Divide.
From there to Upper Holy Jim and I had to give into the slow leak and pull over and change the tube which I did with Fergus and Tani since Tani and flatted also.
Upper Holy Jim Brain-Donkey- broke out the chocolate treats, refueled and down Coldwater we went. It wasn't too bad on the rigid until the "real" trail started after the HAB section. Here is where I did some trail maintenance, flipping right over the bars on one of the switchbacks and landed right in a bush which I believe saved me from further gravity check and the rocks:clap:
I had to walk some sections, might have been easier if I lowered my seat:lol: and had some fun watching some of the riders clear a few of the tough sections near the bottom.
ITT was demoralizing as always- especially 4+ hours in- but the snacks, water and Tequila were life savers! thanks Pat!- since I, ahem "started" with Brian and Andy but shortly after that I looked up and saw them about 2 switchbacks ahead of me then never saw then again, until Main Divide.
Mutz and I cruised up, then he pulled ahead and we regrouped up top.
There we made the Executive Decision to got back to Holy Jim and descend that which was alot of fun as always and there I actually broke a front spoke on one of the rock drops so wrapped that around its neighbor and contiued on.
Got back to the truck at 3:30pm, had a beer, brought the guys back to the road and went home!
Thanks Darin for setting this up, you rock :bang:but I am still bummed that Brian used a "normal" bike..he should have carried those solid tubes but he's a mutant so what can you do:lol:
Thanks Andy for riding with me, always a blast and especially clearing some of that stuff on the single speeds. You are the man!

Great Times!!

t P I U W O P!

I'll have a full post with pictures, here in a little while.

I ended up taking 75 pics, so I need to go through them, then I'll get'em posted.

Oh, Andy, this was number 5.

Number 6 will be next year, and I'll make sure we step it up a notch! :bang:

I have been waiting for this ride, but did not see any posts about it. My 45 pounder has been waiting. oh well, next year. I will keep training...

I've got pictures loading as we speak.

Let us not forget the three FOCer's that showed up a little late.

Frenchy - 40+ lb PINK 7Point7
Shannon - 40+ lb 7Point7
Danno - 40+ lb SC Bullet

Shannon and Danno both cleaned the steep section of Main Divide on the way over to Trabuco! :bang:

Those FOCer's can CLIMB!!

I got the steep section too. I guess the secret to the wall is a heavy bike.

didn't ride any of it. walked the whole thing without getting on my bike once. hamstrings, quads, and fingers were cramping. yes the fingers and hands were carmping. good times.

yep, 40 pound bikes are perfect for santa ana rides! 7 inches of travel baby, sure makes the descents enjoyable!

sunset coming down trabuco

Did anyone happen to see the sky while coming down trabuco? It was pretty dark coming down, so everything in my immediate line of sight was in grayscale. Off in the distance I could see red-orange clouds and a blue sky. pretty cool to see. i should have been paying attention to the trail as i almost ate it while enjoying the view. my toes were frozen by then as well.
