Any water course that eventually crosses or impacts state-owned land, water-resources, or water-quality (even lake hemet or the fly-factory of lake elsinore) is regulated by the state water quality control laws. Eventually, the water draining to Lake Hemet goes to use in that water district for irrigation and drinking water. State control of the water resource means they do have the authority under state rights laws to force closures upon the USFS when it negatively impacts their downstream use....since the creek/dribble in question doesn't cross state lines, the USFS doesn't have the authority to tell the water board to eff-off.

If you were to check water laws in this state, if you do something seemingly innocuous as drain your jacuzzi without a permit in San Pedro, you'd be breaking a state water pollution laws whether it went into the storm-water system or sewer system.

    Sucks, don't it?

This came fom the 24 Hours of Adrenalin race director, who recieved it from the USFS (forest service) who got it from the State of California Water Board's Santa Ana Division if I am following it properly

Very good point, maybe they are just closing for the race? Let us know if it is open when you are up there.

I am an advocate of racing and I know lots of people who love the 24 Hours at Hurkey. The problem, though, is that events like this draw environmental scrutiny of courses. I fear that one weekend of racing may cause great trails to be closed the rest of the year. Because of what I consider to be over reacation by the Forest Service and other agencies over race courses, I wish promoters would stage events on routes that do not raise these concerns. I wonder if these trail closures apply just to the race route or to recreational riding in the Hurkey area the rest of the year.

Can you clarify your statement with some info or you just ffffing with us do you have firsthand knowledge of this happening. what are they going to do put a barbed wire fence at the trailheads cause that what its going to take to close those.

  11. In the HOA e-mail, and from a reliable source " happens to work forth FS" and ride the MV circuit.
They'd like to midigate the situation!
Meaning it is closed to the above said, bikes, horses and foot....
Barbwire? Hmmm. I'd say no! Signs? I'd say yes. Follow the rules?
    Poach and Evade! Nuf said!
BTW I wonder if the Santa Ana Water dudes , USFS, are concerned with the 2 days if thunder showers we had, water 8 inches deep that had everything but the kitchen sink flowing down the STREETS into the CREEKS into lake Hemet, and then some! Ocean?

    With that said, GnR

    Been hidin' out
    And layin' low
    It's nothing new ta me
Well you can always find a place to go
If you can keep your sanity
    They break down the doors
And they rape my rights but
    They won't touch me
    They scream and yell
    And fight all night
    YOU CAN TELL ME
    I lose my head
    I close my eyes
    They won't touch me
    'Cause I got somethin'
    I been buildin' up inside
    For so f-in' long

    They're out ta get me
    They won't catch me
    I'm f-in' innocent
    They won't break me

Sometimes it's easy to forget where you're goin'
    Sometimes it's harder to leave
And evrytime you think you know just what you are doin'
    That's when your troubles exceed
They push me in a corner
Just to get me to fight but
    They won't touch me
    They preach and yell
    And fight all night
    You can't tell me
    I lose my head
    I close my eyes
    They won't touch me
    'Cause I got somethin'
    I been buildin' up inside
    I'm already gone

    They're out ta get me
    They won't catch me
    BECAUSE I'm f-in' innocent
    They won't break me

Some people got a chip on their shoulder
An some would say it was me
But I didn't buy that fifth of whiskey
    That you gave me
So I'd be quick to disagree

    They out ta get me
    They won't catch me
    I'm innocent
    So you can
    Suck me
    Take that one to heart!

Hey y'all, Brendan here from HUB Cyclery & Siren Bicycles, Idyllwild.

I got a call at the shop today telling me to check out this thread.
I'd recently *heard* about these potential closures too, albeit not directly from an authority.
In light of that, I called and left a message on Andy Smith's phone just a bit ago, he's in the field today. I'll share whatever I hear back.
Trail access issues in Idyllwild affect our livelihood, manufacturing, selling, repairing bikes... but also has an impact on the local economy as more and more businesses have been embracing healthy recreation on the hill.

Some random facts & points of interest:
-The Missing Link was not approved for use in this past spring's Idyllwild Spring Challenge
-Coyote Run & the Hurkey Climb were approved for use in this past spring's Idyllwild Spring Challenge.
-I know of no specific (official?) closure of these trails.

Again, I'll let you guys know whatever I hear back from Andy Smith at the USFS.

    Brendan

I hope the 24-hour promoter doesn't do more damage by trying to change the course and causes more trails to be closed.

    Thanks for making the call
That was me who called you,
Cannot wait to hear what we can get from an official source.
If it wasn't so hot right now I would drive up the hill and check it out myself.

Thank you, very much! Taking the fam up there and I don't want to get up there to find out the trails are closed for our use.

    Dont Get excited just yet

I just got off the phone with Ryan Hurley The park Ranger at Hurkey Creek and at this time HE has heard of NO TRAIL CLOSURES and its business as usual people are riding as of today I made him aware of the statements made on this website and He is going to make all the appropriate calls to find out what is going on.
You would think he would be one of the first to know of any closures. So i will sit back and see what happens.

^^ this is why I only believe maybe 1/4 of the content on this website (and most of that 1/4 is from the ads).

If the out-of-state 24 hour race promoter is stirring up a controversy rather than finding clarification and resolution over this issue with the Forest Service, he is doing a major disservice to Southern California riders. He can simply stage his race and go home, but we are left with the controversies and trail question he leaves behind.

  20. He simply asked for help in a course re route, and if we'd still be into it?
