I may change one day to a CX frame and use most of the parts. As far as the wheels..... When I'm old they will be on my wheelchair! :bang:

Peter (Owner of Misfit Psycles) is a stand up guy. He really hooked me up when I built my SS.

Most of you have seen the Marin on another thread but here it is for PacMan's SS request. These pics are a little old since I've junked the crummy Forte Terra Crap tires for Maxxis High Rollers off the Horse and added Ergon GC2 grips.....and oh yeah, I keep forgetting to tie down the front brake cable!

Hey guys I am at this time have a top secret project in SS. I guess not so top secret but I am slowly working on this thing and putting it together as cheap as possible. I am not too concered with weight because I am a fat arse and should and plan on just losing some weight.

I know this my have been talked about before and maybe should have its own thread but what can use for a SS crankset? Should I buy a crankset dedicated for SS or just a regular crankset minus the big rings. Oh and if anybody has some extra SS cranks that they may be interested in selling let me know.

You can do either. I had a regular XTR crankset with the big and small ring taken off for my SS for awhile. It worked fine. Not pretty, but it functionally works.

You can get ENO's, I think? The gold standard for a single chain ring, IMO/E is Middleburn, but they are not easy to come by, and probably not cheap.

Fired Yo Mamma: I use a normal xc crankset with all 3 rings still mounted on it. Why? Because I'm too cheap to purchase a dedicated SS ring. To keep the chain from jumping to the small ring, I use an N-Gear [Jump Stop?] guide that is easily mounted in place of a front derailleur.

just a question as i am looking into making an all mountain ss.

why do the majority of you single speeders have fruity bends on the bars?

is it some certain bend that when you have to stand up and pedal makes it better, it looks to me like they're just beach cruiser bars.:?:

if you could fill me in. much appreciated.

I'm just using a modified Shimano LX crankset with shorter chain ring bolts. Works fine. The chain has never come off a single time.

Sounds like you are referring to the riser bar. Flat bars with a 5-6degree bend are more for XC but for me I have a hard time climbing with a flat bar. The riser bars keeps me in a nice position for climbs. I guess that would make a large number of us "fruity" HAHAHAHA

no not the riser bars, the ones that have a far back sweep on them, i dont see that as very "mountainy," that looks like it should be on a beach cruiser.

    still confused.

    thanks though

this is what im talking about

    Finally Took the SS Plunge.......

It was sort of an impulse buy when I was down at the Path a few weeks back. They had some great deals on Soma frames, so I had one priced out and went for it. I picked my new baby up last Friday, and finally got a chance to take it out this afternoon for a nice ride on Sully Ridge w/ a trip up/down Jedi on the way back. To keep things short, I have to say I'm so happy that I pulled the trigger. As much as I love my 5.5, the steel Soma just gave me a completely different riding experience.......reminded me of my childhood days of hammering my Diamond Back Silver Streak BMX bike around. Definitely can't wait til the next ride. :bang: A HUGE thanks to Tani and Sarah at the Path!!!!!

    Here's the setup:
    18" Soma Juice 29'er
    RockShox Reba SL
    White Industries Eno Cranks
    ACS Freewheel
    Shimano XT Clipless Pedals
White Industries Eno Disc Hubs laced to Stan's ZTR Arch Rims
    Bontrager Jones XR Tires
    Easton Monkeylite Lowrise bars
    Thomson X4 Stem
    Shimano XT 775 Disc Brakes
    Thomson Elite Post
    WTB Laser Saddle
    CK Headset
