I had a great time riding with the STR folks today! Thanks for organizing the ride, Brewtal!
Roman, Danielle, Nathan, Steve, Kevin, Brian, Shud, Jim and his son Roark kicked some serious trail butt out there. We were riding on the edge, literally at times, eh Roman? ;)

What a great day, and what a great ride!!

I think this is what we were all after...

And we found it. In droves!!

My day started early (by my clock). But, I had no gas, so hadda stop at the local 7-11 which was socked in in fog (sort of -- it was very gloomy anyway). Just so happened that musicmaker pulled in to fill up as I was pumping my petrol, so we caravanned down to PCH, and passed Dino and Suggie on their way to Pt. Mugu.

Here is the man, and the mountain!!!! (No shot of Suggie -- she stayed in the truck until they moved it to the parking lot to avoid falling rocks!!)

We arrived late-ish and all were ready to roll as soon as we got there...

DSC_4358edit.jpg

We rode up Sycamore Canyon Fire Road from the campgrounds to the Backbone turnoff, about a mile and a half up. Upchuck's friend Jim was out with his 14-yr-old Roark.

DSC_4368edit.jpg

Seeing these two made me miss my own 14-yr-old, Willie, on this ride. :( Willie currently has 20 stitches where his leg met a flat pedal the other night...

Some of us rode down and up the BB climb, while others rode the other way. N4th4n (who's 36th birfday it was today!!!) rode out, followed then by the rest...

I stayed back and shot those shots, then rolled through and hit a rock right in the middle and hadda put a foot down in 10 inches of water. Dammit! :bang:

Not exactly a great way to start the day..

More in Part 2 to follow...

Enjoy!

Great start for an RR!!!

Was an awesome day of riding (and pushing).

The A group were seriously killing it out there, at least from the few times I saw them blaze by.

Especially loved the pair of tandem teams blasting ny me on their DH run!

Shud's Big Sycamore Adventure, Part 2

Speaking of tandems... I was followed up the BB trail by our two sets of tandem riders. First up the chute were carbonman and ShugaMama on their Ventana Conquistador:

DSC_4373edit.jpg

A little while later, Vince's (Upchuck) friends Art and Jenn (non-STR folks) climbed up on their borrowed Els Witness:

DSC_4376edit.jpg

Art and Jenn developed chainsuck probs on the BB climb and I quickly lost sight of them as I climbed up the trail. I passed the Conquistador a few minutes later and attempted to bridge the gap to the main group, but by the time I hit the top of the climb, they had already rolled. I saw a rider that we would see several times during the day (Mr. Smirk!) and asked him as he flew by me if a large group had gone thataway. He confirmed, sort of, so I left a trail marker for the tandem crews...

...and sped off to the right in search of STR folks, whome were spread across the mountains now like ticks (and I didn't really know where I was going...). Fortunately I caught up to Jim and Roark, so I knew I was on the right track. Whew.

Sadly, that was the last I saw of the tandems...

I forgot to mention that the B group headed off up the Syc fire road. We would meet up with all of them later as we were descending Guadalasca (but they were climbing it!).

Back at the spine, I finally caught up to the main A group. We were still socked in up there.

DSC_4378edit.jpg

Something happened with my cam and I shot a bunch of way over-exposed pics as we descended. Ah well -- I did my best with them:

Here's Upchuck, leading everyone out down Guadalasca. Sorry I did not get everyone's name or STR ID. Let me know if you know, and I will edit to include names, below:

Man, that was a freakin' awesome trail! The colors are just unbeliavable right now. Get to it soon if you wanna see it in all its glory. Soon enough it will all be brown...

Mas en Part 3!

Enjoy!

Yada Yada Yada, Part 3

I was just following by this point -- had no idea where I was. :?:

By this time I had taken a good spill, brought on by a rut, of course (d'oh). Bloody number 1.

Soon enough we came upon the Ranch House where we paused for a few minutes while Roman filled his leaking tire with a few pumps. Some of the boys took the time to roll out on the see-saw there...

And then we ascended almost to Newbury Park it felt like where we hit a dry grassy bit of ST that was really fantastic -- the famed Sin Nombre! Too bad for me one of the trailside bushies decided to grab my Ergons and toss me to the dirt. Bloody number 2. Dang-uh!! :-k :-k :-k

Can't I make it through an STR group ride without a mechanical or without hurting myself?!?!?! Apparently not.

So, after taking three falls (I didn't tell you about burping my tire on a tree root and coming off as a result -- no blood that time! Woot!!), I left the cam in the pack. Before too long we descended Two Foxes to Woods Canyon, where Upchuck bid us adieu and headed back up to Newbury Park, and we rode to the bottom.

N4th and I stuck around for a little while for the B Group, but I hadda go, so off I went.

I finished my day by passing the Encinal Canyon Trailhead where Trojaninsomniac's farewell ride was happening... Where were you guys?!?!?! I saw all the cars, but no one was about -- and it was 12:30!!! WTF?!?! You only rode 20 miles and 2,700 feet!!! :?:

I told a couple of non-STR folks there getting ready to ride up the BB to let you know that I made it up. Don't know if they ever saw any of you lot. Hope you had a good ride like we did!!!

Enjoy!

When you have nearly 50 riders at different levels, it'll take a while.

Pace was mellow cause too many Backbone virgins. Lots of re-groups as well so we didn't lose anyone. We did more like 24 miles and 3600 ft. Looks like you guys had a good ride as well.

^^^ I know, Gene! I was j/k -- I saw the pics n the other RR. Lots of cars in that parking lot, too!! :bang::bang:

I know you were. I think we were all the but a few cars there. As far as Sycamore, I've never been. Definitely need to get up there and do a ride. Great pics as usual Shud.

The couple I met who were setting up to ride right at 12:30 were stunned to see so many cars in the lot. She'd told her husband, "...and it's always empty -- never anyone on the trail!" I told them how many of you were out there (I said 40+, so I was right), and she looked like a deer in headlights! Ha! She then asked, "Will they all be together?..." Maybe you guys saw them on your descent? Nice couple. For just a moment I thought of hitting the trail myself, but I bent my front rotor so my front was not rolling well at all, and I was all tuckered, so thought better of it. Glad you guys had a great time. Must've been like herding cats!!!

- shud

Roger and I saw them as they were riding up. I was wondering why someone would start out so late in the day as it was very hot!!!

Great pics, Shud! I'm not sure what the mileage and elevation was for the A-ride. Having dropped in from Newbury Park, I ended up with just over 30 miles and 2800'. I ended up regouping with Art and Jen on the tandem on the way back up the Black Betty to Newbury Park. That was their first time on dirt tandem. Jen was a trouper!

It was an awesome ride, it was my first time riding point Mugu and i liked it a lot, of course i followed the b group by instinct

My whole day started when i woke up at 3:30am to catch the 4:30am 62 MTA bus heading to LA, it was all dark and i was the only one other than a couple cars on the street, it really felt kind of weird but nice and peaceful at the same time to actually see the busy streets filled with cars and people all empty and spacious. :)

Once i reached Downtown LA i caught the 90 bus heading to Glendale to meet up with the rest of the gang heading to the ride.

Once i reached Glendale i only had to wait a couple minutes before i met up with Fewinhibitions, bushman and El Immigrante pulling up to the parking lot with his huge F250 truck which put a big smile on my face :D to carpool up to Malibu, what a fun ride it was on that truck, we then took a pit stop at one of the stores close to the trail head as El Immigrante hand some issues with his right contact that was irritating his eye. (all was good after that)

While we were waiting we calculated how much the package was worth in the back and it turned out to be a pretty hefty amount....
------
not much pictures on the ride as i was enjoying the view and place a little too much at some points. B group pace was great, pedaled up to the peak without having to stop and El Immigrante was on my tail almost all the way to the top, he is a new rider and i rode with him at turnbull a couple weeks back were he had to hike a bike on the fire road, i cannot believe how much he has improved (Amazing improvement!!!)

Regroup at the top as we were waiting for the rest to make it with some fun conversations and jokes being thrown around...

what a great view, the sun peaked on us for a little bit to warm us up and then went back to hiding as we started to roll again...

Brewtal finally making it to the top and had to take a short nap, what he did not realize is that spot was filled with ants...

Post ride BBQ Was great, nice chit chat and thanks to all for organizing this ride, nice to meet all of you and seeing the familiar faces too, dino and GF, carbonman and mom with their awesome tandem, Fewinhibitions, bushman, El Immigrante and the rest (sorry bad with names but you know who you are) and nice to finally meet and ride with brewtal, great and funny guy!

^^ a little too much beer, had to go to the restroom before we left and still had to take another leak, so we had to pull over while on the freeway for him to do his business...

^Great food at the BBQ, thanks for hosting this and what an amazing BBQ you have built up

and last but not least our ride stats: http://rnkpr.com/a5ryhs

Nice work on the post Moka. Had a great time hanging with the B group. All you guys (and girl!) were a blast to ride with. That's what's it's all about people! Great people + great trail=great day. That barbecue is sick! I want to hear more about that. Obviously an old truck guy. Wish I was there.

Much thanks to all for coming out and hope all had as much fun as I did!
N4th4n, thanks for bringing the tire and forgot to mention HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Upchuck, thanks for leading the A Group charge!
It was a complete drag with last minute mechanicals prior to the ride with broken spokes, BB issues, out of stock issues with shops, etc etc ,and when I pulled my bike off the rack in the morning I realized my rear tire was on backwards! I could only laugh, shake my head, and say %^$# it! I'm going as is!
I was a little concerned at first when I only saw a couple folks in the main parking lot. Then, slowly but surely, then a wave of cars/trucks came pulling in with bikes attached!
I was wondering how them tandems fit on a rack without swiping cars in the next lane but, I'll be damned, they fit!

Kinda funny, I've seen this a few times on group rides where someone asks "Ok, who's in 'A group'?" Folks look around a little unsure and sizing up the riders next to them. But we took off as a large group, kickin' up dust, and we let the main fire road in determine the groups.
As we passed a hiker, he said (with a smile) "Dang, you guys need a water truck ahead of ya!" as he waved the dust cloud from his face. I couldn't help but hum the chorus from C.W. McCall's theme song from the 1978 classic "Convoy." Don't know it? Rent it tonight! I digress..

After Sycamore Cyn to Ranch Center to Sin Nombre to Two Foxes, we regrouped under the tree and the shenanigans began! This is when I realized that not only was I riding with knuckleheads, but that I was definitely in the right group! Deh deh dehhh! ;)
I lieu of climbing Backbone or Hell Hill, we headed up Wood Cyn to climb Guadalasca. It was my first time (in two years of riding the area...WTH?) taking Guad and wasn't sure what to expect. Shudder's photo captures it perfectly. (great shot Shud!)
DSC_4392edit.jpg

It not only looked like, but also smelled like we were riding through a nursery! Amazing scenery that took my mind off my clicking knees and bottom bracket. A little ways up...the ground began to tremble...birds scattered from the trees...rabbits grabbed their young and took shelter in their burrows...What could it be? A nuclear attack? A hoard of invading enemy tanks? It was Shudder and two others bombing down Guad with grins reminiscent of childhood! Normally, I get jealous when folks go blazing down a trail of which I am climbing. Wasn't the case this time, though. Oddly enough, I was enjoying this climb, the weather, and the scenery. It was kicking me arse but I found myself saying "Thank you sir, may I have another?"
I reached the top of Guad to the glorious (and somewhat sarcastic;)) cheer of my fans in B group. JMoe29er suggested, wisely, that we descend the route from which we had just came but curiosity for the current condition of Backbone would prevail. Shoulda went down Guad. It was still fun but the trail has yet to return to it's former glory. Sandy and loose at the top and the flow is much different through the lower sections. One good day of rain would do a world of good.
It's always great to meet some cool new people on these group rides that was certainly the case for this one! Look forward to riding with ya again!
PS- Not pics just yet. I forgot my my pack/camera/helmet in the back of El Immigrante's truck!#-o

Great shot Few!

1953 Ford F 150! After many beers and scribbles on napkins, my buddy Josh and I have been talking about this thing for a couple years. His idea was to locate a front clip of a classic that could accommodate a grille underneath the hood. Couple weeks ago he sent me a picture to my phone of this one sitting on a flat bed. Scored it on Craig's list for dirt cheap. Been up 'til 3am the last 4 days with the welder trying to get it finished for yesterday's BBQ and from napkin drawings to a working 1953 Ford BBQ! Q is still in rough version with more mods to take place including paint, distressed brass leafing for the trim work and ornaments, sink with running water, and a mini fridge tucked in the back. A prototype, the goal was to get it operational and yesterday was her maiden voyage. Friggin' awesome, I love it when a plan comes together!
Once she's all finished up y'all are definitely welcome to come check it out

You are the friggin' man, Moka! Your day was starting as our night was ending!
That's dedication brother, glad you made it out!
I now have no excuse for not making the Fully Loop with y'all!
