Last Saturday Tom the Bomb and I were doing Mt Lowe. If you are unfamiliar with this ride it has a lot of exposure and very high consequences for failure. We were almost done and was coming out of the lower section of the Sunset trail when we came across some riders looking over a cliff. I asked if every thing was alright. They informed me that a kid went over the side and his Dad jumped down after him. The cliff had to be at least 100' high with a small ledge in the middle and nothing but rock on the bottom. They said the boy was up and walking (which is unbelievable) but wasn't sure how hurt he was and that they were walking out of the canyon.
I was wondering if anyone might have any info on who it might of been and how they're doing. All I could think of was Ryan or Vincent.

I just did the Mt Wilson/Lowe shuttle this Saturday. There's some pretty scary exposure there, but it was the most fun I've had on my bike in a long time.

In case you haven't seen how the trail looks like, here's a nice video with some nice crashes (not my video). :)

I was there that day....First time I ever called 911 on an mtb ride. Gabe saw the guy go over his head by the steep switchbacks. The rider clawed his way up to the trail with a broken hip and a broken bike frame. Tried to stand and said, "It doesn't feel right..."
We watched the helo take him to Huntington Memorial.
After the Station fire you can really see how exposed the trail is. The San Gabes demand your attention and respect. The penalty for failure is high...

Wasn't us, heck, I won't even take Vincent to SART. Thanks for your concerns. I think Jim and Ryan were at Bootleg over the weekend. Hope the kid is OK.

    Does look fun though.

I was climbing the Merrills Saturday morning, and heard that something had happened, but didn't get any more details.

Nice vid... except most of the crashes in the first five minutes are on a section of the ridgeline that isn't a legal trail.

And yes Rojo, the full rigid guys rules!

I, too, rode this trail twice a few weeks ago and it's nothing to take lightly!

Next time I will be fully padded with ff helmet.

Wow, I hope everything is OK.. I hate to hear of something like that because it reminds you how easy it is to get hurt doing what we enjoy doing.. yes we were safe and sound in Bootleg.. as safe and sound as you can be in that place.. I do worry about that kind of stuff happening when riding with my little guy.. even riding Luge when you're bombing could end up badly.. I don't want to keep him from riding stuff he wants to ride and I know he is capable of riding but at the same time it only takes one small mistake and your life can change.. so I am always worried about my little guy when we ride.. thanks for thinking of Ryan and Vincent..

Man this video makes me feel like a pro. I consider myself pretty much a straight intermediate rider, but I've ridden this trail a few times and never had a crash on it, this guy can't seem to keep the wheels down. Egoboost+10! Gnarly trail though, the exposure is pretty freaking serious on there.

I know what you mean. To be fair, the video is a composite from two guys, one of whom runs his camera on the side of his helmet, and the other has it on top. I have to give them props for posting a video that doesn't make them out to be superstars.

I consider myself a 4 or 5 out of 10 downhiller, and I didn't crash either. I was riding an overforked 5" travel Giant Trance (150mm fork) and it was just right for this trail. I don't jump, and I'm usually scared of drops, but this trail system is so flowy that I was hucking the 1-2' drops and just generally tearing sh*t up that I would normally take slow.

I rode Sunset tonight. And I had the whole trail to myself. At night, the drop offs don't look any more that 10 feet.
