I went to a public outreach meeting today at Clark Park in Buena Park. It was to tell the public about the Harbors Beaches and Parks Department's strategic planning process they are under way with and to get public input. They were very organized, and the Department as well as local and county officials were there in force. There were about 20-30 people from the public. The process seems to be very well coordinated, with the end result being an action plan at the end of 2007. There are 3 more outreaches scheduled at other locations in the next few weeks, and I recommend attending if you can.

There are some big issues being considered at this point. The main issue seems to be what the limited resources of the HBP should be directed toward and perhaps what they should stop being directed at. For example, maybe they could acquire more open space, but stop maintaining some of the historic sites. They recently turned over the Newport Harbor facilities to the city of Newport Beach.

I wasn't the only MTBer there- there was one other guy. Unfortunately, I had to leave a bit early, but my wife stayed. I encourage others to find out about this and get engaged. We need to protect what access and resources we have and perhaps set the stage for even more.

Hey, they had a raffle and I won a free Annual Pass\\:D/. No more parking across the street at Carbon Canyon for me!
