Opinion's on Trek bike...

I was looking for a more freeride bike so i can have some more fun on the downhills and saw, what i think is a deal, on this Trek frame. Being kinda new to the sport wanted some more experienced opinions. It's a closeout '05 Trek Session 7. I know its not up to most of your guys standards but is it ok or should i look at a used better bike?

Frame: ZR 9000 Alloy main frame; ZR 9000 swingarm w/178mm (7") travel
Front Suspension : Manitou Travis Single, 180mm
Rear Shock : Manitou Swinger 4-way coil
Wheels: Bontrager Earl
Tires : Bontrager Big Earl 26x2.6"
Shifters: SRAM X-7 , Front Shimano Deore, Rear SRAM X-9
Crank: Bontrager Big Earl 22/32 w/bash guard
Cassette : SRAM PG970 11-34
Pedals : Bontrager Big Earl platform
Saddle : Bontrager Earl K
Seat Post : Bontrager Big Earl
Handlebars : Bontrager Earl, 50mm rise, 31.8mm

trek makes fine bikes...that is a great bike that you're looking at. i'd go for it.
here's a plus...lifetime warranty with trek...all the treks that i've cracked (older models) all replaced no questions asked...(i've cracked my bullit also) if you buy used and there's a problem you're assed out. it is as good in quality as any other bike people ride.
jump on it it's a solid bike...do it do it
 
could be great, depending on the actual deal. what is the price?

that trek looks like a solid bike, if the price is right go for it as long as you can pedal it up.
 
A friend of mine that rips downhills and jumps got one of these a few months ago and loves it.
 
I'd probably go with the Trek over the Iron Horse if they are priced similarly. Seems that the Iron Horses have some reliability issues with pivots. The Trek has the lifetime warranty. The Iron Horse suspension is a much better design. If you don't mind doing the maintenance, then go for the Iron Horse. For $939, the Trek is a no brainer.

Don't know about that. We have a demo KIng Fisher 1 at my LBS and with only about 50 miles on it, the rear King Earl hub grenaded the other night.

Don't know about the Session 7, but have experience with the Remedy 66 and the rear on it seemed to flex quite a bit. NOt sure if the Session has the same problems or not.

Also, the Big Earl tires suck pretty good. They roll really slow, are heavy.....and, oh yeah, don't hook up on So. Cal. terrain.

One other thing to watch our for is the adjuster knobs on the fork. They have a tendency to fall off.



HOwever for $950, you really can't go wrong.:?:

To me it looks ok but what the heck do I know. I won't get any '05 stuff untill at least 2,010. haha

So in a nut shell you are saying the rear hub sucks ($$$$ to replace / relace), the tires are crap for where we live (DH tires 50.00 bucks each) and the adjuster knobs fall off the fork (fork he will like, big $$$$)

Sounds like it's kinda taking the good out of that $950 deal. lol
 
i had a trek fuel (not comping bike) and had no issues with frame but most bontrager parts on it sucked! (cranks, wheels, tires, bars). Although i hear they made improvements since then

But price sounds decent for that bike. not that $1K is easy money but you can ride it for a while and if your ready for a new rig after can prob sell in ebay and get a decent portion of you money back. I sold my old fuel after riding it hard for a few seasons and got decent price for it

Think there are a few guys who ride the iron horse 7.7 and 7.5 at oaks alot (think path and foorider guys). hit them with pm and see what they say on the IH rigs

Thats what im worried about, buying it, using it and replacing more parts then the bike is worth:mad: . Thats kinda what happened with my current bike and don't want to do that again
 
I'd go with one of those IH 7Points. The issues with the pivots have been resolved on the newer models, I think. Perhaps Winston can provide more info. The 2 bikes should weigh about the same, but the DW-Link from what I hear pedals really really well. Have you also considered where you are getting the bike? A good bike shop will be easy to work with in regards to warranty issues. I know e-shopping you can get some really smoking deals but for peace of mind I like to shop locally. In any event man both good deals and good bikes, get one you will love the extra cush!
