Old Camp: another Jeep over the side

That front bumper would look good on my Jeep... I wonder if I'll need extra bungee cords to keep it in my Camelback on the way down the Luge...

They removed the front bumper and winch.....from the sounds of it, they started taking off the good parts they could.

I was kidding... My Jeep already has a stout bumper. Main difference being that it's never been driven there or anywhere near Saddleback!

What a Week can Bring

Owner modified?
Just one week ago I took the picture (bottom pic). You can see an intact jeep in a precarious position, in perfect condition, left front tire high on the bank and intact, window shield intact, body intact, winch intact, etc.

I was totally shocked to see this thoroughly thrashed Jeep (top pic), in a very different position with the tires missing, windshield shattered, trashed fender, and reports of missing fuel tank, cut fuel lines and previous gutting already reported.

If any mountain biker were to attempt to cause such damage, he or she would need at minimum a hacksaw, wrenches, socket set, etc. just to remove the parts. Then to damage the body that way, the person would have to be able to singlehandedly roll the jeep over and over to cause so much body damage.

Instead, it seems more likely that the original owners (or rogue Jeepers) got some other four wheelers out there with their own winches, etc., tried to pull the jeep out, lost balance trying to get it out so that it rolled over and back below the original position, and in the process broke off the wheel, etc. With nothing but a piece of unsalvagable junk they decided to cut their losses, part it out and leave the carcass to the public to deal with. Who knows?

Additionally, that carcass is becoming a popular spot, and remains dangerously perched over the side. Hope they get it out soon.

Unbelievable.

Exactly.....how do you explain this to your insurance co.?

I am sure last week the owner had a conversation that went something like this: "Hello Mr Insurance guy. I would like to talk to you about my Jeep that was stolen from in front of my house last night......."

Money makes the world go round folks, unless you're the government, then it just shuts down......

damn. its a rubicon. those things are spendy!
I rode up there yesterday.......the decal on the hood says 'RUBICLONE'. It's no $50K jeep, but looks like it was worth some $$.
The pictures don't do justice to depict how augered in this thing is, or how steep the ravine is or how soft the dirt is. The adjacent terrain is such that positioning other vehicles with winches would be pointless.

the thing is with accidents they dont care how stupid you were. to me this isnt an "accident", but im sure it will be covered anyway. i flipped a ranger off roading in 2004 and totaled it and they didnt even ask me a damn thing. just sent out a check.

You pay more for off road insurance on a jeep. The question is did they have it? If not the stolen vehicle would still pay.

This bitch is going nowhere, Jeep easily slipped down the length of the Vehicle and some. Wheels are gone and seats from the looks of it. Glow sticks, dirt bike tracks and water bottles everywhere.

I don't know how much rainfall the STT got, but it's bad news for Jeep drivers. In order to get to the current wreck, they've got to drive past the site of last year's abandoned vehicle. That section was a mudslide we rebuilt the trail over, and is maybe 200 yards east of the current wreck. If that soil gets saturated and a vehicle tries to cross it, there's a good chance the whole thing will let loose.

If someone knows anyone in a legitimate off-road club, I'd recommend having them ask those members to take some initiative on behalf of their fellow off-roaders and figure out a way to close access. It's not just a matter of having decent driving skills, or whether or not it's legal to be there... that section is not engineered for vehicles and won't handle the weight. Check the slope on the trail's downhill side and imagine a trail failure under a vehicle. By not doing anything, responsible Jeep owners are allowing ignorant or illegal users to set themselves up for a fatality.

I understand we've got limited options for off-roading in and around Orange County. And I know Cadillac offers a fun challenge. But its hard to believe any responsible Jeep owner would let their friends or friend's children drive over that mudslide if they'd seen what it looked like when it occurred.
