On Saturday coming back down from Old Camp (about half way to the Luge) I spotted this Jeep over the side, not too far from where the last one got stuck.

Did you go down to see if anyone was pinned underneath it? No not legal for motorized. Wonder why they did not winch themselves out...any trees near by to use as a anchor point?

Nothing around there....looks like it is at the pinch point that Kioti installed a few years back to keep the vehicles from traveling any farther down.

Either they tried to go around it and slipped down, or trying to do a 20 pt turn and rolled off the trail.....not very wide at that point.

If that's true, then Jim (Kioti) gets to keep the Jeep, along with our continuing gratitude!

We have had a couple vehicles off the side at a trail in SD that I will not name. Someone spotted one of them from below and called CHP, who concluded that the vehicles would remain in place unless the owners were willing to pony up to have them extracted. Kind of a shame to see them left there, though maybe they will serve as a warning to other 4x4s.

More Pics

Maybe you can see in these pictures the winch cable which was unwound up to the trail--but nothing to attach it to. Maybe they had another vehicle at the time--the incline and angle looks gnarly. That left front tire is on solid ground. Yeah--if you can get it out I'll bet they would give it to you--nobody underneath.

Here is an entry I made on geoladders on 5/13/2012

Jeep Genius: We now have a new obstacle to clear on the way to Old Camp, somewhere below Cadillac, thanks to the Genius Wrangler Jeeper who managed to 1) 4-Wheel his way down the trail beyond what he could recover 2) then fall down the side of the cliff by his jeep 3) call for air-sea-land rescue when he was 20 feet over the cliff and not hurt 4) never show up to reclaim his jeep (which can't be driven back up safely). I'm thinking we could save the public money (they airlifted a fallen horse last week) by just converting the jeep into a good sized permanent jump--putting some dirt under the bumper and over the hood to make a cool jump. That would be a good message for other would-be Genius 4-wheelers. I think we have a well-deserved Darwin Award here. Just say "Hi" to the jeep next time you pass it, and wonder, how amazing Genius can be. Anybody want a Jeep?

Then on 6/2/2012 I entered on geoladders:
Good news: The Jeep is gone; Bad News: they cut a path for other jeeps to descend :( (Which undid Jim Kioti's efforts)

(Was that more Darwin at work? Hind Legs, Opposable thumb and Beer!)

Pretty sure they do not charge for helping these guys out. Well there was the couple who disappeared around Holy Jim (see coverage of that on this site), and they had Cocaine in their car, so maybe they recovered part of that.

stupid jeep tricks...
There is NO reason for that thing to have gone off the trail.
Wait, there is NO reason for that jeep even being on that trail in the first place. Karma is a beyotch. lol

I would like to see this, anyone climbing up there today or tomorrow ? Still not sure it exact Location all tho i do have an idea.

wait no one give that jeep a helping hand and help it roll a couple of more times so they can park it more flat down at the creek?

Nice jeep and winch, sadly the driver is a complete idiot. Did anyone call the ranger? They would pull it out and dish out proper reprimand.

I rode up Cadillac a couple days ago and noticed that the gate at the bottom is wide open. The jeeps driving up are probably not even aware that the road isn't legal. I wonder why they don't put in a better gate at the bottom to keep these guys out?

Yes, the Forest Service is aware of it.

There are aware of that as well. It's been discussed many times, but even with the gate shut and locked, there is a go around to the right of the gate.
