Rode it with Koke today. They had to cut the course a little short this year because of some flack from Cal Poly and the Landfill. Still should be fun. I cleared that last steep, but it was at my limit in terms of vertical (i.e. almost falling over backwards). The course should be nice after there is some more traffic on it. Be careful on the big downhill on the other side of Temple. The Agriculture dept. put a barbed wire fence across the trail. You'll need to slow down and slip around it on the left. See the walkthrough on geoladders.

I wouldn't call it a drop, but a fairly steep, off-camber descent. It's a bit loose right now and that fence cuts right through the middle of it. Ben was saying that you used to be able to bomb down that patch. This will be my first time racing this course, so I'm not sure exactly what it used to be like. It's on the other side of Temple from the football stadium, parking, etc.

I have a Blur XC and a Trek 8000 hardtail. Which bike is better for this race? The Trek is 25 lbs with a Reba fork; the Blur is 28 lbs w/ a 3" Skareb fork.

There is nothing on this course that you would benefit from full suspension (although I'm riding a 3.75 inch travel Yeti ASR).

I say stick with what you're most comfortable.Seeing that you've been spending all day and night with that Blur as of lately you should race that one even though it will be probably be a disadvantage you will probably finish in a better time because you are more used to it.

I'm in Sport - might as well get 3 laps for my money. (55+). Look for a green El Patron.

Does anyone know if this is a trail that is open just for the race, or can anyone go and ride it at any time? I'm new here and new to mtn biking, so basically I have no idea what I am doing. I do have a low tech mtn bike that I want to take to the dirt and trails and see if I like it. Mt. Sac is 3 miles away, so if anyone can suggest any newbie-friendly places around here to ride, please let me know.

    thx

Bonelli is close to you also. Bonelli can link up a lot of different ways, good practice for anyone, and newbie-friendly. Even better, get a light and do the Monday night ride with Incycle in San Dimas!

I didn't even think of Bonelli. It has been at least 15 years since I've been there, but I guess I'll just park somewhere and look for trails? Maybe with a little more experience I'll do that night ride.

You can park at the carpool lot at the Via Verde exit, enter Bonelli right there, and the park office is right there, they have trail maps in the office.
