So today I planned to do harding -> motorway -> maple -> harding but that didnt quite happen.

Sarah woke up late and then couldnt find the meeting area so Pete and I started at about 9:40am. Because of some time constraints we decided to just do harding to the peaks and back down. Which was still cool because I had never been to the peaks. Weather was just about perfect! Saw a lot of trucks on the ride.

We did a slightly extra credit ST for a mile or two on the way down; I think it was upper joplin? At least that's what ocrider said it was. Oh yeah, saw mathew coming up harding as we were coming down and so he joined us back down. Pics coming soon.

And yeah. . . we sort of figured that steve's ride had gone awry because we didnt see them rolling into harding. Oops!

Who's up for the real ride de la muerte next week?

trucks going up harding???? i have only done that ride a few times but never seen a truck on that trail? Gate open at bottomg or on main divide beyond Harding?. btw - the ride you planned would have been a solid ride - dont think I have ever climbed both maples and harding on same ride

Should have been more specific . . . didnt see the trucks on harding but saw a lot (around 8 - wasn't really counting) on the trail between 4 corners and the peaks. Also saw a group of like 7 dudes on dirt bikes too at the peaks - they were pretty impressed to find us up there on bikes with no motors

me me me me! who's up for carpooling from Huntington? George? cuz I DO NOT know my way ... can we do it Saturday?
How about sunday? I'm supposed to be in temecula to see an old friend on saturday.

You won't see any trucks on Harding, I hope it stays that way to let that sucker revert back into a near singletract like Santiago Truck Trail.

I like climbing Harding, because it is not as loose and dusty as the other roads to the divide. Blackstar, since they bulldozed Hidden Valley Ranch, does not see much vechile traffic, but I bet Irvine Ranch uses it lot. I prefer to ride that area on the weekdays to get away from the dirtbikes and trucks.

I climbed both Blackstar and Harding this week up to the maindivide and I was wondering. When you guys have been out there have you ever run accross the either Riverside or Orange County Sheriff's? I see Forest Service trucks and communication people but no Sheriff's.

When I am inthe Santa Monica's, I regularly see LA Sheriff's in there squad cars patrolling.

No I've never seen any Sheriff vehicles out there at all. Just Forest Service/Ranger trucks and the communication company trucks like you mentioned.

Blackstar isn't a bad climb but since you're all the way down at the end there just aren't many loop options except for Motorway. At least when you climb Maple Springs or Harding you are at 4 corners and you've got a lot more options since Santiago Peak is only a few miles away.....and also Joplin.

Rob I agree, but when I ride out there I am always on my rigid singlespeed...getting some climbing in. By the time I get to Beaks Place I still have something left so I ride out twards Sierra Peak or out Skyline a ways and come back. By the time I get to 4 corners on Harding I am usually toast and that loose rocky climb to the peaks just is not inviting

I don't think I would like Motorway on a rigid bike...I do not like it that much with suspension. Now if there was a easy way to get to Trabuco...I would ride out there more often.

Yep, me too. But there is no EASY way.

Not exactly easy, but Holy Jim to Trabuco is one of the signature rides of the Santa Anas. Can't think of a better way to get there, short of a helicopter drop.

Forget the muerte, go with the vida loca. Next Sunday, bubbs.
