Yeah, it can get pretty ugly around there after the festival shuts down...i think they forget that drinkind at sea level ain't quite the same as 8000 feet!

I just wanted to let everyone know what an awsome time I had in Mammoth. Thanks for the "cherry pop-tart" on my first dh experience! I guess going down the Double Black Diamond for the first run wasn't the original plan, but hey I made it through without too much damage.
Thank you Andy and Ann for you generous hospitality! You guys rock. Love that new bike Ann...you know what I say, once you go black (nomad) you never go back! Hehe.
Well I'm hooked and I can't wait to get a dh bike...Hmmmm... I rode so many bikes this past w/e Andy was calling me a bike slut! Well you gotta find the one that fits you right (right)?
Thank you DINO for being such a giver...and making my Mammoth experience an enjoyable one. I don't think I would have been soooo hooked had you not let me ride you rental most of the day. (I didn't like the "clown bike" I was riding, the Switch, I originally rented). Franky it was nice meeting you, maybe someday you can be my mentor too! Hope to see you on the trail more often.
Alison I think you have the biggest ovaries on the hill....including you Justin! But the both of you are going to be hard to stop.
Everyone else Nancy, Roger, and friends it was great seeing you guys on the hill. Also to my other Incycle friends I ran into up there "hey."
Only thing I can think of that sucks is, you guys had to go home, while I'm up here in Tahoe riding more trails.
CC everyone at the Fully Loop in a week...or so.

Bikes don't kill bunnies
Stupid question, but having not been there on a bike before and heading up on the weekend of the 18th, am I gonna be hating life on a 6" travel bike? How bout a 5" bike? The only reason I ask about the 5"er is because I get a slightly slacker HA when I run it in 5" mode. I'm going no matter what, but it's always nice to have a realistic idea of what to expect.
As an asside, did you guys happen to notice anyone riding Bottlerockets up there, and if so how did they seem like they were fairing?

FB - as Justin said, the 5-6" bikes are fine up there. We happily rode our Stumpjumper and Enduro up there last year and had no complaints. You may not be able to hit everything that an 8" dual crown can hit, but there are MORE than enough intermediate trails to keep you busy all weekend!!
Definitely hit up trails like Off the Top, Beach Cruiser, 7 Bridges, Downtown. If you find those are just way easy for you, definitely do Skidmark, and you can try stuff like Lower Velocity, Shock Treatment, Bullet, Flow.
Also, wide tires will make you enjoy it more

I used to do Mammoth on my Hardtail with 3/4" of Manipoo elastomer travel. Any of the downhill trails you'll want to be on a bigger bike. It's just easier and smoother. You should be fine with a 5" bike.

FlatBroke- I rode it last weekend with a 5" bike. Had plenty of fun, guess it kinda depends on what you want to ride...hitting Bullet or DC-10 type stuff might be a bit much, but if you're content not hitting those then you'll have fun on it...
Chiming in on the tires...rode a Weirwolf 2.5 up front and a Fire XC Pro 2.1 on the back, seemed to climb just fine w/o spinning out or feeling too sluggish, and tracked through the kitty litter fine...I'm kinda liking that setup, rode the loop with it today too; tracks nice w/o the spinning weight of the bigger rear tire...
edit...though now that i think about it, I remember thinking that I did want a bigger rear tire while I was out there...so maybe a 2.1 is a bit narrow!

FLATBROKE- The Bottlerocket should be just fine. Sprockethead and I have done most of those trails on 4" bikes. Not ideal- all we had at the time.
I have two recommendations.....
1) Use the widest front tire your rim can handle (2.5 would be ideal). Mammoth is not famous for hardpack. It is famous for loose terrain. Pain Freak and Mechmann's MAMMOTH tire of choice- CHUNDER!
2) A heavy bike is a stable bike. If that means going with your heavy pedals, heavy DH tubes or even a brick under your seat- it all helps!
Take the bike.... have fun.... if it doesn't work out, rent a bike for the second half of the day!

Thanks for the heads up on tire and trail suggestions. As far as weight, our whole crew has that covered 
Out of curiosity, aside from the drop that everyone always shoots pictures of on Flow, how is the rest of the trail? Also, is there a "b" line around the drop? I'm assuming so as there are always tons of pics/short vids of it.

I've been telling people about these tires since I got mine last year in Mammoth. I still have mine on and it is the best damn tire out there. Hooks up even in that pumice.
Even though I'm not a mad hucker, I did 90% of Mammoth on a 5" spot worked very well for me. I looked around and it's a pretty wide selection of bikes up there. The fastest and most talented rider I seen the whole week was a friend of mine riding a hardtail, and he was killing it. Personally I have to be used to a bike before I can attempt most stuff. Run watcha brung....works for me.

CC was definitely a bike slut! She took the 7 1/2 inch but wasn't satisfied so she fell in love with Dino's 8 1/2" and rode that ALL DAY LONG. I'm sorry but I can't be your mentor because I was totally out-gunned this weekend walking around with only 6 inches
