Looking for a decent shop in or very close to Torrance....next visit gonna be getting my 17 yr. old nephew set up with mtn. biking gear. Gloves, helmet , LYCRA (not really, would I do that to the boy !?) just enough to get him started especially with Del Cerro being so close. Any ideas :-k ...

There's a shop called Smith's Cycles on PCH about 10/15 minutes from Del Cerro but I've never been inside so I can't comment on prices or service.

Smith has some good stuff and I've always gotten really good service from them........that being said, never bought anything big from there. Unfortunently it's pretty dismal to be honest. if you cant get to the path in Tustin I would have to suggest Wheel world in Culver city. great prices and a huge inventory.

hey sharky...you might want to check out Performance Cycles on Redondo Beach Blvd. (east of the 405). The place is huge(compared to other shops I've been to) with lots of gear (not too many big brand names though), and they have some pretty decent bikes in the showroom. They have a couple of Rocky Mountain bike models, the Slayer and the Switch...and they also have a ton of Iron Horses, particulary the 7point5 and the 7point3, MKIII, Sundays, but unfortunately, I didn't see any 7point7's...

Also, on Rosecrans, just west of the 405, there's Helen's Cycles...its a small shop...but they do stock a fair amount of brand name gear...and as far as bikes go, you can expect to see Trek's, Santa Cruz's, and Cannondales...

There are two other decent shops...Bikecology on Sepulveda Blvd. (east of Crenshaw Blvd...not a lot of gear, but a ton of bikes in the showroom (mainly Treks and Kona's)...and then there's Beach City Cycles on PCH in Redondo Beach...another small shop, with a fair amount of gear...Kona and Specialized are the big names (that I've noticed at least)...

I think there's also a shop in PV somewhere...I think it's called PV Bicycle Center...it's somewhere in the Rolling Hills area...I believe they stock a lot of Specialized bikes...

So'bay used to be pretty good for riding AND shops. Needless to say its pretty much a shadow of its former greatness (which is strangely mirrored in the decline of much of the communities that comprise the area).

The Performance on Redondo Beach BLVD used to be Circle Cycle, and while they could sometimes be a little elitist, they had the goods. Down in Redondo, there was B.C. (Bicycle Center USA) which had a good selection and had some notariety for sponsoring a few former BMX turned MTB guys.

Ahhh the good ol' days.

The Path in Tustin is definitely somewhere you'd want to check out, and I'd also toss in a vote for Adrenaline bikes in Tustin/Orange as well. I stopped by there for the first time today, and they seemed to be merchandised fairly well, and the guy I talked to was extremely helpful. Plus they price match via their website which can be helpful with Jenson having typically good prices advertised.

If you're going on the weekend, just make a couple hour trip out of it, hit up the Path and Adrenaline then take your pick of trails within 20 minutes of there.
