I'm in the market for a 2006 Stumpjumper (not the comp or pro, just the plain old hard-tail with the Fox fork, no disc brakes). I live in Fontana. I've been to Competitve Edge in Rancho Cucamonga but they never have the Stumpjumper in stock (since August 2005 anyway). I have called Don's Bicycles in Rialto and spoke with the owner who said he'd order a Stumpjumper but he'd need me to let him know I was coming in ahead of time to get it built. That sounds reasonable, but I'd then feel obligated since he'd ordered and built the bike. I'm inclined to at least give the guy a chance to sell to me because he seemed so willing to help. But, I don't want to put him out. On the other hand, the C.E. guys mostly seem preoccupied and kind of, I don't know, not really all that enthused about selling me a bike. I've been in the about six times in the last six months. Each time I ask about the Stumpjumper. Only once has anyone mentioned ordering one and even then they didn't follow through and do it.
I would like to be able to ride the bike a bit before committing to buy it. Anybody know of a LBS in the area that carries the Stumpjumper? I'm surprised because it doesn't seem like such a high-end bike that it would be prohibitive to stock.
I'm willing to go 20 miles or so to look at the bike. I did want to buy local because of repairs and tune-ups but if the price and situation was right, I'd buy outside my immediate area. As it is, both Don's and C.E. are 8 miles from my house.

It's more than I wanted to spend, but OTOH, it's the exact kind of bike I want. So, given that I've been riding the same bike for about 15 years, I figure it's a pretty good price, altogether. $1799 was the sticker. Do you guys know if there's any room for bargaining on these things? It's been so long since I bought a bike. Since they were cool and the bike is $2000 MSRP, I'm not inclined to really haggle all that much. But, I wondered if there was something standard to ask for.
So, I got a pump, slime tires, stubby bar ends, a cyclometer (how can I impress my wife with how far I rode and how fast I went, otherwise?), and a light for night riding. The guys at the shop were happy to help me find stuff and to throw it on the bike as soon as I picked it out. Heck, they even installed the cleats on my shoes so I could ride ASAP. I've been to bike shops were they just can't be bothered to install accessories, so it was nice.
