Rode Tijeras today and the trail is looking great. The Jungle is blanketed in leaves. I snapped a couple of pics, but was enjoying the ride through the Jungle that I only stopped once.

Man, your pictures bring back some fun memories!
I used to ride there quite a bit when I first started MTBing. It's been too long since I've ridden there. Your pictures make me anxious about getting over there for the "big" ride!

There are a few things I like about it that makes me take the trip from downtown HB:

Longer route (~15 miles), so more bang for the buck. If it is costing my $8 in gas to get to Pleasantvile, I want to get the most I can out of it (and 15 miles, 2-2 1/2 hours is my threshold at the moment).

More of a cross country trail. Sections with plenty of trees and even water, which is nice in Orange County.

I love the Jungle singletrack. Not long, not fast, but feels like your out of the city. I am not a city boy. I don't like SoCal. Unlike most, I don't ride for the downhill, I ride to get out of the hustle and bustle and try to enjoy nature instead of concrete, strip malls, cookie cutter homes, freeways, fake people, etc.

Not crowded like Aliso.

Downsides for some people:

Nothing really technical, no gnarly downhill, and quite a bit of fireroad.

I really like it. I have only been riding a couple of months. Whiting (3-4 times), Aliso (once), Peter's Canyon (once), and Tijeras (~6 times). I saw a geoladders route connecting it with Whiting, may have to try that once I have better legs.

Were you able to try out Waterworks? It almost has that same jungle'esk feeling and isnt cardio intensive.

No, by the time I got to that point I was a bit tired and my knee hurt. I hit my knee on the stem in one section and it was not happy. However, with the description I have a good idea where to turn out next time.

Is it obvious how to return to the trail once you are done with Waterworks or do you climb out the way you come in?

If you want to get away from people (athough there will be some)...and you want a workout ... and good bang for your buck...you should try riding some of the trails in the Santa Ana Mountain (Cleveland Nation Forest)

I am sure those are nice rides, I may be able to do Blackstar before too long. However, I have watched videos of the Luge and I don't think is for me. Too steep and deadly, I'd be over the edge and dead. :)

Heights and narrow drop offs are not my cup of tea. I barely make cactus at Whiting and that is going really slow.

I will be giving Tijeras another try in the morning ~8:30. My friend Johnny is finally back in the saddle and we are going to try going clockwise and finding Waterworks. After back to back riding days on Wednesday/Thursday, I hoep that I have that legs.

Waterworks hits arroyo trabuco, just turn right onto to it and you'll soon be back in the jungle.

Found Waterworks today. That is a nice bit of singletrack EXCEPT for the first part coming off the road. It is pretty steep. My friend Johnny went OTB, so I decided to walk down that bit. After that though, it was awesome. :)

It was cold when we headed out at 8:30 and even colder after I plowed through the water crossings and got soaked. :) We went opposite the geoladders route and added on Water works and skipped the ridge at Coto. Everything flowed better this way and teh addition of waterworks was great, except the Jungle. It rides better the other way. Solution . . . ride through, double back ride it the other way, and then ride ride through again. :) Didn't hurt that there were lovely joggers going through.

Some more pics, it is beautiful this time fo year:

Darin,

Let me know, I can plot something cool, even epic.

Start by my house, Oso and Antonio, Waterworks, tijera's creek, to Chiquita ridge, Trabuco wash, up Cadillac to the SST to the Luge, O'neill park and end it up with the Arroyo trabuco and the jungle.

Set it up Serge! That sounds fun!

How is that climb up Cadillac?

NASTY!! #-o

How is that climb up Cadillac?

Steep and loose. You can see it from Live Oak/Trabuco Canyon Rd. It's just a fire access now since they bulldozed it during the fires. Not worth the effort unless you are starting from the Trabuco wash just to get to Old Camp and back out.
