I guess another way to do Joplin is to do it as an out-and-back. Take the Santiago Truck Trail to Old Camp, go up Joplin, then down Joplin (and then maybe take the Luge to get back to the trailhead just to add some extra fun). I know i know, loops are more interesting than out-and-backs, but STT, in my opinion, is just more user friendly than Harding, Holy Jim, or Maple Springs. A lot less brutal....

That wouldn't be a very fun hike at all. You would be hiking up around 2,000 feet in about 2 miles. In some areas it is super steep and loose also.

Climbing up the other ways are much more rewarding in my opinion.

Joplin is about 2 2/3 miles and is a heck of climb even without bikes. I know, Ive done trail work on it twice in a few months and it is no fun to hike.

lol....well thanks for the info...maybe I won't be trying that route after all...Alright. Maple Springs it is! Because Harding is closed, and I don't want to destroy my vehicle by driving up that terrible dirt road to get to the Holy Jim trailhead..

Most of us ride in from the Trabuco wash area dirt lot. So when you come down the Luge, You ride back on Live Oak or through O'Neill park to your car.
