It's alive again..on the cheap (pics)

I finally got my butt in gear and built the project I've had sitting in the back of my mind. I got my brother's very first mountain bike, a 1988 Performance. I stripped it and rebuilt it as cheap as I could. I hope I don't have any part failures because of it. I also stripped the old paint and sprayed some rustoleum on it. All the steering setup is nashbar branded, except for the Oury grips, I got some coda (inexpensive but work pretty well) canti brakes. Wheels, cranks and pedals are from my spare parts, tires are bought used from FXRob (Thanks!), and the saddle's nashbar. I had to scavenge the front cable hanger off of an old Schwinn World Sport I have in the garage. The seat post, BB, and headset are original as is the fork. And I got the inexpensive Nashbar conversion kit, running the 16T cog. The 32T Salsa ring's from REI. I'm still waiting on that sweet STS chain tensioner to be in stock at the Path (thanks for the info EvelK) Here're the pics:

The last Jasco paint remover coat was just applied. Tip for the future: make sure all paint bits are gone. I missed a couple small spots and when I finished repainting, the new paint just fell right off of the old paint bits still on the frame

Here's the bike hanging in the garage after being painted. I used one can of primer, then green, then clear. I then let it hang in my garage for several days

I couldn't wait for all my parts to get in, so I put some parts on during the week

And here's the final product. The paint job's kinda weak; I chipped it all over the place while building up the bike. Next time I'm going to use that nasty rustoleum spray paint that looks like built up rust, so it doesn't matter how it looks, but all in all, I'm happy with it. It's just in time for the weekend!

I can honestly say that that's one of the nicest ss bikes I've ever seen ... and boy have I wasted time looking at ss bikes on mtbr.com.

I'm also building an ss, with that nashbar kit too, so I'm really glad you posted this.

My bike's really rusty though in some areas like the bb and seattube... does rustoleum remove rust?
One more question... what paint materials did you use to repaint the frame? I'm thinking about repainting mine eventually. I'll build it up first though so I can ride it as soon as possible . (then I'll strip it of course...)

Anyway, beautiful bike. Great color choice.

I was gonna say , those are some nice cranks. The tapered fork gives me the willies like a lefty.

Get the DMR STS you won't regret it.

Thanks All! If you were to see the bike in person, you'd see that the paint actually looks really bad, hehe, but that's all good. Good eyes for catching the White Industries cranks. I got those in 97 and when I sold the bike they were on, I didn't have the heart to part with them, so I've had them stashed for awhile.

TheFarLeft: Rustoleum doesn't remove rust. I think you can get something called Navy Jelly or something like that, or you can just scrub it off with a steel brush or pad. Rustoleum's supposed to stop rust from growing if it's already there or it'll prevent rust, supposedly. I used Rustoleum glossy paint, and the primer's the professional grade stuff, whatever that means. I probably should've let the paint cure for a few days longer to make it harder. Next time if I try to do a nice job I'll paint it over a week or more and do one to two coats a day and use at least two cans of the color and two cans of the clear. Bust most likely I'll just powder coat, hehe. I'm hoping to try it out on July 4th if my back's feeling ok.

Oh yeah, EvelK, I never found out how much the accupuncture costs - http://www.socaltrailriders.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=495 - because my sister in law got in a car accident and has this insurance settlement where she had an account full of insurance money openned with the accupuncture doctor, so I go for free. sweet, more RSSR's, hehe. Too bad, I can't make it out tomorrow. I'm set to ride at STT on Monday at 7:30am. My bro likes his rides early. I'm not sure that I'll be riding the single speed, though, because of my back. I'll probably have to ride my gearie on Monday and play it safe. If that ride goes well, I'm open for a group ride next weekend!
