is iron horse a decent brand bike or is it cheap? the prices seem to say its decent but then again why are they half off... http://www.rscycle.com/Bikes/Mountain-Bike-Clearance-Sale
They're fine bikes but IH no longer has the licensing for DW-Link so you can expect that the warranty frames will be of different design than the ones you buy...etc.
iron horse frames are great. they incorporate the dw link. http://www.dw-link.com/physics.html Reasons why the Iron Horses are a plenty. unless youve been living in a cave, there is: 1. a recession, noone wants to spend any damn money 2. a recession, almost 10% of californians are unemployed 3, the 08's are being cleared out, its 2009 they are great frames, I've ridden a MkIII, its a great pedal up and very stable on the steep chutes
Iron Horse are great bikes. Just dont buy from a chain store. Mongooses are great bikes, but I would never buy one from walmart. For a full squish, if it is less than 1200$ ( generally speaking) its crap.
I ride an Iron Horse MKIII Without a doubt the greatest bike I have ever owned! The dw-link is the most COMPLETE linkage on the planet!!! The frames are quite solid. Even if they were pieces of junk, the parts alone are worth more than the price they are selling the entire bike! Why so cheap? * RSCYCLE is owned by the son of the guy who owns Iron Horse * They are now the exclusive retailer of Iron Horse bikes * They are clearing our dw bikes (presumably) to make room for the new linkage bikes * It has been rumored IH may be sold to another company * If they are sold, some question the future availability of parts * The employees that made them IH great are no longer with the company * There are a few other reasons... My opinion: At those prices, there is no greater "bargain" on the planet
I can think of one better bargain:lol: I use to ride a IH MKIII. I didnt get rid of it because of any problems with the bike but because I found a screaming deal on a bike that would suit my new riding style better. I was a great All Mtn Bike.
While it is true that you did find yourself an amazing bargain... Doesn't change the fact one can purchase a COMPLETE Iron Horse 7 Point for the price you paid for your "bargain" frame! Ya' did good son
Oh snap! I forgot about that! Two great frame deals in a row! You are quite the bargain shopper
Read this post below before buying. I have broke two frames a Niner and a Turner both where replaced immediately and they both answered there phones in a couple of rings. Both Turner and Niner monitor their forums on MTBR and answer questions there. http://www.socaltrailriders.org/forum/general-discussion/31793-i-need-dw-sway-arm.html Dean
In my opinion Iron Horse bikes screwed The Path over pretty hard. We were a 50 to 100 bike customer a year. We helped get the word out about DW back before it was a widely recognized linkage.
Sorry to hear that Tani. That's makes me want to not ride my 6Point, good thing it doesn't have an IH headbadge or say IH anywhere on it
i wanted to get a bike that had a dw link the ones that did are boutique bikes and right now i didnt think spending 2500 for a frame was justifiable so i got me an 08 mkiii and love it. actually got it from RSCycles great shipping and customer service. this bike climbs like no other bike i've owned...dont have to fuss w/ propedal or lockout you just climb
things to consider I can't believe i'm going to for once not bust Dino's balls on an Iron Horse, but...I can agree with Dino and others that the MKIII is a solid trail bike, and the DW-link a very good suspension design. There are a number of riders here who have upgraded to the higher end IH bikes and been very happy with them. That said...I quoted what I found to be the most important points of what Dino said below. While that is a great deal on a competent trail bike, I'd be pretty leery of investing time and money into a bike whose parent company is in the process of a major transition. Knowing that parts may not ever be available for that frame, since the entire frame design will be changing to something as yet unseen, would concern me.
Ironhorse are quality bikes, they just need to be in the over $1k area. I have a 06' MKIII, solid for 3 years. A very well balanced bike, durable too. A buddy ordered a 08' MKIII from rscycle about 3 months ago, very happy. I 'm actually looking around for a Sunday or a 7-point next. I think it's the marketing that IH has, not really up to par with the other bike manufacturers. If their marketing was real good, they would probably be one of the most popular bike co. around today.
Whats the sizing like on these bikes, I'm looking at a 6 point 4. Normally I ride a large fram 5'10" with a 32" inseem. Looks like the 17 runs large with a 23" top tube. I really want a bike that will take a beating and at $1400 seems like a killer deal,
