I've had the idea for awhile, but wasn't really motivated to do it until I experienced severe chain suck that trashed my granny ring and my chain, and scratched up the paint on my chainstay/BB. So, I went and bought a Salsa 32t chainring, removed all unecessary parts and presto! Now I'm a 9 speeder with just one chainring upfront. It works great. I wasn't so sure if I could hack it, but I rode up BFI at El Morro this morning with no problems. We'll see if this becomes permanent or not.

Welcome to the ranks of the single rings. I find that 9 speeds are fine for all but the steepest climbs. I am getting stronger the more I ride and it gets easier.
