i will give you 14 bucks for your ultimates LOL, so you feel you dont have to shell out any extra for the hopes!

What? the bleeding is sooo straigh forward. Hold a plunger, degass, and shoot fluid in. (and hold the lever down)

way easier than hayes nines... and more thorough

I'm really surprised that Hope's are not posting higher numbers :?:, Very impressive quality, modulation and stopping power, they just give up allot of weight to Formula's

Avid Codes are legit. They don't play nice with alot of rotors but mine have been issue free with the supplied rotors. I weigh about 180lbs geared up and my bike is around 40. The codes are strong, fade free, and very rugged. At my weight I doubt any brake can outperform them. If money wasn't an issue however I would probably be running Hopes.

    Here is my brakedown...

    Avid Juicy 3, 5, 7, Carbon, Ultimate:
Pros- Easy to bleed, fair stopping power, matchmaker works with SRAM shifters. Good modulation
Cons- Sometimes noisy, reach adjust doesn't do much, pad changing can be difficult

    Hayes Mag & Nine:
Pros- Very durable, flip-flop master cylinders, good power when set up right, works with SRAM matchmaker
Cons- Bleeding is a chore, high heat fade, bleed screw on caliper seizes, bolts on master cylinders strip out, lever replacement is almost impossible (mags), poor modulation

    Formula ORO:
Pros- light weight, decent power, easy to bleed. Can change pads without removing calipers, fair modulation
cons- waiting until they go out of buisness again, adapter sizing is wierd, quality control is non-existant. overpriced. sometimes noisy

    Hope Mono Mini
Pros- Goregeous machining, great power, no heat problems, good modulation
Cons- a bit heavy, advanced bleeding is a pain, pad chainging can be a bit tricky

    Magura Louise FR & BAT
Pros- Great power, easy pad changing, no heat fade, quiet (unless pads are contaminated) good modulation
Cons- Bleeding can be complicated, they look pretty plain

    Magura Gustav
Pros- Power to spare. No really, more power than avid codes or Hope Moto V2 or M6. No heat fade, floating calipers allow for rotor irregularities
Cons- Heavy. sensitive modulation (more than one finger is too much)

Boats, I need you to be more specific on how bleeding can be a pain, a chore or complicated. Please put your ratings in 6 packs. How many 6 packs would I have to throw down to get you to bleed each of the above brakes for me?

I assume Avids would be a one 6 pack job since they are easy in your book. You fill in the rest.

Shut up DeeZee, no one wants to hear it. ;)

    Duno about that!

    Hope Mono Mini
Pros- Goregeous machining, great power, no heat problems, good modulation
Cons- a bit heavy, advanced bleeding is a pain, pad chainging can be a bit tricky#-o

it takes 2 fizzy waters to bleed Hopes and 5 to bleed Avids:lol:

Just curious here... I'm having a problem with the terms used in this thread: braking power and modulation.

Stick with me here as I step through my reasoning.

After the initial take up on the brake lever, the pads come into contact with the rotor. We'll call this point "zero braking."

"Braking power" would is determined by the amount of force needed on the lever in order to lock up the wheel, right? So if little pressure on the lever is required to stop the wheel completely, we would say that system has great "braking power," right?

Modulation is the "control" that we have over the degree of braking. It is measured by the difference between the pressure on the lever at "zero braking" and at "locked up."

So on a system with good "braking power," it stands to reason that it would have poor modulation. Conversely, brakes with poor "braking power" would have better modulation. An extreme example is rim brakes: you have a lot of control over a wide range of pressures exerted on the lever, but the amount of pressure required to stop the wheel is much greater than on a disc.

So it would seem that excellent braking power and excellent modulation are mutually exclusive, and the best one could hope for is a balance that is subjective and dependent on a hundred other factors too numerous to list.

I've got more thoughts on this, but I'd just like to find out what others think are the qualities make a superior brake and make sure I understand the terms being used.

    Thanks.
