....a weight weenie that is.

Just picked my bike up from the shop.....came in at 20.3 lbs and without much effort should easily be 20 lbs, which is my lame arbitrary goal...

today the mods were the fork (saved 1000 grams) and tires swap (saved about 240 grams).

because i have this lame disease now for this bike, i am gonna put on some light 26" tubes (many people do to my suprise), cut the seatpost, and put 710mm FSA DH Carbon bars which will save only 30 grams but will be smoother than the Easton EA70s i have now....since the bike is non suspended again.

that is what i said....but plenty of 29er riders are apparently doing it, and some pretty awesome riders I might add. They are even using lightweight 26" tubes very successfully......so long as they can stretch, which most tubes made will, no problem....if you think about it, tubes get HUGE if you just pump them up outside the tire.

That thing is very nice Foshizz, if it had a Reba on it I may want to test ride it. :p

you missed me by one day #-o for that offer....this is from a few weeks ago out at Gridley in Ojai..

the reba 29er is probably now going up for sale....my other "project" is a custom Ventana 29er and it will have a Maverick SC-32 on it and i figure i dont need 2 29ers hardtails with suspension.

Yes that is all I run, Maxxis Fly Weights, crazy light. If you put the stem in the rim and start working the tire from the other side it helps. Or you can pump up the tube, not in the tire, and stretch it out for a couple of days then no problem.

Changing a flat on the trail is not as fast as a 29" tube, so I bring a 29" tube or a pre-stretched 26" on the trail with me.

Sweet build Fo. How much do you weight? I want that fork.

Nice

I was looking at that wheelset in 26", crazy light. How's the engagement?

A Thomson Masterpiece seatpost will save you some weight too.

The funny thing is, we get caught up in this weight weenie game, and in reality, we could all likely loose 1/2 lb out of our Camelbaks by removing empty gel packs, duplicate tools, der hangars for bikes we no longer ride, etc.

With that said, I'm gonna be pissed if my Flux comes in over 25 lbs.

excellent advice! that is the tube i could not remember. Thanks!

I weigh 175 lbs in my speedos....about 179 lbs in my speedos with cowboy hat and boots, without shaved back.

The fork has a weight limit of 210 lb on their site which is pretty awesome. The fork is friggin sexy....I should be even more of a chick magnet than I already was if you can believe that!

The reason I went with it was for a few reasons....(1) weight savings. it only weighs friggin 770 grams which is about 400 grams lighter than say the Karate Monkey, and 1000 grams lighter than the Reba 29er, (2) my new ventana 29er is going to have suspension so i saw no need for this one to have suspension too as the ventana will be more trailworthy anyway given its stronger build and slacker head angle, and (3) I strongly prefer the height of the Karate Monkey I used to run on the One 9 when i first got the bike. The Reba at 80mm setting, with 25% sag, comes down to about the same axle to crown as the Karate Monkey/Pace but when climbing of course, with the Reba locked, it is actually 490mm since there is no travel adjust on the Reba and on a single speed i definitely notice the head angle change in a bad way on climbs. The reba at 100mm was awesome down hill, but just made the One 9 way to slow in comparison. The Pace 29 is almost exactly the same height as the Karate Monkey (468mm KM vs 465mm Pace).

i leave for a cruise tomorrow (7 days) and will sorely miss all of you (except dirttorpeedo of course  )

I look forward to riding with you again when i return.

Honestly, the only reason I bought the American Classic wheelset is cause I got such a good deal on it ($200 for the whole wheelset). While I have had zero problems with it, I have heard enough stories about the poor quality control, bearing issues, and internals that I would probably deal with more weight but like I said, at $200 I would have been a fool not to get em. Having said that, they have been flawless for me....perhaps i just got lucky?? I love their lightweight, wheels are still true, so personally, i cant complain.

Yeah...weight weenieitis is so friggin lame! this is the second time I got the disease. The first time was early last year when I build up a sweet ass cross country FS bike that was friggin fast as hell....wish i still had the mo fo but i am so lame i cant keep anything the same for long...This FS bike came in at 23.5 lbs which just kicks ass for a FS bike....i really miss it at times (though I probably only rode it 10 time :) ) I am such a friggin pathetic bike whore it is embarassing

Socks? Please.

I recently had an old, heavy a$$ silver filling drilled and replaced by a new, sleek composite one.

O.K., wasn't for weight savings, but I swear I can feel it on the uphills ;)

teeth

Rob is so screwed when he gets those gold teeth to match his 'Pack. That has to be at least another 100 grams.

No way dude, I'm getting the carbon fiber teeth with the gold weave to save weight :bang:

I've got the same wheelset, except mine is for a geared bike. I've been really impressed with them so far. I set them up with Stans and it's working great. Are you set on tubes?

actually, no, i am not set on tubes....i just figured i would try the lightweight tubes thing first is all.

are you running the 29er version of stans? i will probably go ahead and do it....i just need to see which 29er tires folks are having decent luck with before i do it.

thanks!

Fo, you can also save some weight by getting foam grips (Titec Pork Rinds, etc.) and going bolt on rather than QR (http://www.oddsandendos.com) You are also light enough you can replace your Thompson stuff with Syntace. If I were lighter and afflicted with your disease I would switch to Syntce stuff but for my weight (195lbs in Speedos) Thompson is just fine.

I should have mentioned there are a few things I will never compromise on.....grips are one of them. I will NEVER run anything but ODI Lock-ons...the benefit outweighs any weight savings I could ever imagine....

Syntace stuff is nice, and perhaps on a XC geared bike i would (and have run the F99), but I would not on a single speed where you are torqueing the crap out of it....Thomson X4 is not that heavy anyway....about 30 grams lighter than standard Thomson stem.

I wil perhaps consider Thomson masterpiece or carbon seatpost.....maybe, since when I am really cranking on the pedals I am standing anyhow.

My new bars I ordered are FSA DH K Force Carbon bars.....they will be nice and long (my easton are 685mm though) and about 40 grams lighter.

I GOTTA stop somewhere :D
