I had today off and decided to get in some miles.
I headed up PCH to Malibu and climbed up Encinal.
It was hot and I pushed myself.
At the top I sat under a pine tree where there's a water faucet and poured cold water over my head about 5 times.
It helped stifle the headache that was developing.
I then went down Mulholland Hwy and back to PCH. Awesome roadie downhill with tight S turns you can just lean into with a tiny amount of braking! One of my favorite in the Santa Monica's for sure!
An Americano and oatmeal at the Trancas Starbucks and I was off again! :bang:TAILWIND!!
After pushing it at 25 to 27 mph I was passed by a Tri-guy! What a set of legs on him!!
He zipped past me with a wave and I saw a free ride back to Santa Monica so I dug waay deep and bridged up to him.
I sat on his wheel for a minute and then said; "you ok with me sitting here for a bit?" Stupid me! I was tired.
He turned his head and responded but it was a longer than usual response instead of a simple yay or nay.
I had ear buds in and my 'doh' moment was not removing them to hear what he said.
Fact is though, on his wheel, we were motoring and I wouldn't be comfortable taking the buds out at that speed with debris and pot holes and all!
I looked down and we were going 32 mph. This free ride suddenly went from being a rest and recover on someones wheel to a challenge of how long can I hang on! And it wasn't long my pretty, it wasn't long! Sorry. Had to throw in the WW of the West!

He maintained a 30 mph pace and faster and I would start to fall off but again, digging sick deep I was able to get in the draft of his wheel.
He was constantly pointing out debris and obstacles which was good because the minute I came out of his draft, I'd get dropped.
What should have felt like a relief was instead a major suffer fest but I managed to hold on and it occured to me that this is what moto-pacing must be like!
It also occured to me that what he must have said to me when I asked if I could sit on was probably this; "Sure, you can try, but I'm speed training right now for the Hawaiin Ironman and I plan on going balls out and making the end of your ride miserable!" :-s
At some point I realized that I was well over my limit and I already had 65 miles in my legs so it was time to back off (or did I get dropped?)
I think it was a combo of the two. I yelled 'thanks dude' and in a flash he was gone!
He was still pointing out obstacles even when he was just a speck in the distance so I guess he never heard me and I'm flattered he thought I was still there.
He's probably still pointing them out even now and I'll bet he's in San Diego by now, or TJ.
After that fun fest, my speed dropped 18 to 20. Even 16 a couple times.
I'm happy I was able to hang on as long as I did, but I'll bet I'm shot for the rest of the week-end!
    distance: 84.5
    elevation: 3600
    Avg. spd. 17.5
    Thanks for reading

    You amaze me lady.

This is the kind of stuff I try to tell my non-road riding friends about how fun road riding can be. It's exhilirating to hit those speeds and if you can hang on to a wheel long enough it's amazing the distance you can cover. I know climbing up Encinal is a mutha by itself.

You're making me feel guilty because of my lowly 45 miles with about 2K of climbing.

I used to train with buddies who ride xc Pro, same thing we did a 32 mile pro course at Mammoth and tried to average 17mph, I had to crawl to a stop and fall over to get off my bike as my legs were useless after that. Needless to say I dont do that anymore hills are for trucks and shuttles.lol

That was the idea. But seriously, I just don't see those screamin' fast guys on my rides. Maybe I need to start earlier, or maybe I need to ride somewhere else...

Enjoyed your storytelling, I imagine you probably weigh 120(all muscle), and ride a 16lb. bike.
