Day Fourteen:More Phill's_Bear Creek
I talked Larry into riding Phil's World in the morning to avoid the heat (going to be in the 90's again). We rode at a slower pace than the day I did it solo. Larry had to walk a few spots but still had fun. He took a break while I opted for the 5 mile tech loop. This scetion was definetly tougher than the main loop. more rocky with steeper ups and downs. It took me about 45min before I got back to Larry. W finished up the last section, had a beer, and drove about 30 miles north to the town of Delores. The original plan was to get a room and check out Bear Cyn trail the next day. Instead I talked him into checking it out first. This had to be on of the most scenic trails of the whole trip. It had some semi-steep climbing at the start but not bad after that. It was at high elevation and the temps were perfect. We only rode up about four miles. Afterwards we skipped staying in Delores and drove to Canyon De Chelly.
Through the woods on Phill's
Cliffedge on the tech loop
One of the roller coaster sections
The start of Bear Cyn Trail
Me messing up the view
Meadows are nice
So many dandelions that they look like snow
Day Fifteen:Cyn De Chelly
Checked out Canyon De Shelly, no riding. It was kinda lame. We thought we would be able to ride up the cyn-not. The only way to go up the canyon was to hire a guide for big $$ and either hike, ride a horse or go by 4X4. None of these sounded good so we just drove to the tourist lookouts. There was one trail that you could take down into the cyn from the mesa but it was over 90 degrees and neither one of us was into it. I had filled all of my memory cards so no more pics. The views down into the canyon were awesome and still worth the trip. Afterwards we drove through the Painted Desert on the way to Flagstaff.
Day Sixteen:Flagstaff
Larry wasn't up for riding so he dropped me off at the bottom of Mt Eldon and went into town. I rode up Shultz creek trail. I ended up getting lost on a renegade trail that had some nasty steep sections and lots of downed trees. All of the trees had debris built up on both sides so they were rideable. Some were 2-3ft high and a little scary not knowing what was on the other side. One had a 2X6 going up with a boulder to drop off on the other side. I found my way to Sunset trail and climbed that to what I thought was the Brookbank trail. It turned out to be a logging road that led me back to Sunset. I took sunset down to Shultz creek trail and back to the parking lot. On the drive home we hit no traffic. The perfect ending to an almost perfect trip.
