Hey FoShizzle - SS questions

Fo. I've got a 1996 Mongoose IBOC Pro-SX frame (Ritchey Logic tubing) that I built up as a geared bike in 1997. It's now back to frame status, and I'm thinking of turning it into a SS for riding around the neighborhood with my kids, and bringing along on the vacations where I might do a short ride or two. I like the idea of running an Eno Eccentric hub because it will go well with my existing White Industries Tracker front, and I'm afraid to use my White Industries Ti Cassette hub with spacers due to the aluminum splined free hub body. For cranks, I'm thinking of just running what I used to run on it. Race Face Turbine LP standard drive. What chain ring do you recommend to fit 110 BCD? Right now, the frame does still have the '97 Judy SL fork. The frame is designed for suspension, but 1996 forks and I'm thinking I'd even be pushing the geometry with an 80mm. Does anybody make an inexpensive rigid fork that would work well for an older frame? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

like the idea of an eccentric hub for sure....that is what I would do with a normal frame to convert to SS.

for chainring, assuming you want a non-ramped ring, i think there are enough decent 110 choices out there. here are a few that come to mind...by the way, webcyclery and bikeman are great to snoop around for single speed parts and the such. the usual cast of characters....Surly, Salsa, and Spot chainrings.

is your frame a 1" headtube or was it 1 1/8" by that time?

in terms of inexpensive rigid forks (< $75), Surly, Tange come to mind. webcyclery or bikeman probably have both....or perhaps even others.

Cool, thanks. Yeah, it's 1 1/8" headset. It looks like the Surly or Salsa rings are the way to go, because I can get something smaller than 34. I'm thinking something at least as small as a 32.

i run 32t on mine. but it really does not matter too much to be honest.....you can always put a cog on in the back, with either 32 or 34t up front, to meet the same gear inches requirement

e.g.,

32t / 18t --> 47.1 gear inches = (32t)(26.5 inch wheel)/(18t)
34t / 19t --> 47.4 gear inches = (34t)(26.5 inch wheel)/(19t)

etc....

I think out of convention, since most middle chainrings are 32t and lots of people just use that same mid chainring (ramped or otherwise) to convert their bikes, that is what people run.

Regarding forks, it must have canti posts. I like the idea of the Tange, because it also does not have disc tabs. Although, I guess I could really run disc up front and v-brake in the bike. But why spend the money? V's would be plenty for that bike.

V's may fit the theme better too....more retroish.....looking forward to seeing the build. more importantly, looking forward to riding with you. my wife finishes her nursing school semester tomorrow so i will be able to ride again! i have become out of shape in the past several months but it will all be worth it...cant wait to be able to ride every weekend again!

I really wish I would have never sold my first bike. A '93 Rockhopper. It was the Comp and a cool dark green color. It was a 1" headset, and of course the steerer tube was threaded. In 1994, I put a Mag 21 fork on it. I ended up selling the bike in 1999 or 2000. Then a year or two after that, I was at my parents and they asked if I still needed the fork. I tossed it at that time. What was I thinking for getting rid of that cool old bike? It would have made a rad SS.
