HELP: I need a good, low-budget light setup...ideas???

Hey gang,

It's about time I bought myself a light setup decent enough for moderate night rides. Trouble is, I don't have a lot to spend. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Each set is $99. That's roughly my price range (up to $125 or so max). Am I on the right track??? Thanks in advance!

I've got a 10W Niterider trailrat and it does fine for me.
It's not as bright as some of the other systems out there - as long as you ride with someone else it's no big deal.
There are a bunch of lightweight, low-heat led based lights that are coming out soon.
Pricing on the older designs should be dropping.
I wouldn't buy the StuperBlow brand - with their pending demise, the warranty may not be worth much.

Nightrider classic gets it done. You won't need to upgrade any time soon either.

I've got a L&M commuter which is decent if you aren't riding anything too technical (like the fully loop). Otherwise something brighter would be better, my L&M Arc is dramatically better....but obviously beyond the budget you are looking at. I'd say a 10 watt system would be the minimum I would get.

i have the 99 dollar NiteRider Rat is it? About 8W? It's Okay, takes a long time to charge though. I'll sell it to you for 50 bucks if you are interested.

I'd recommend the HL-20 from the specs. It is close to the same setup I have, which is a Nightrider digital 12 pro dual beam. The HL-20 looks like a really good value. The 10 Watt headlight will probably not cut it. You will have to ride really slow on downhills. With 30 Watt capability you can ride near full out on downhills.

I may go with the HL-20 on the bars and supplement that with something like a Trail Rat for the helmet. Supergo warranty is not an issue; it's just some wire, a bulb, and a battery. Hardware store fix if anything breaks. And at 20w, it should be plenty for moderate rides. Thanks guys! \/
