Last night at JAX Greg said he loves mountain biking and has been doing it since 1981 and rides a Trek Fuel 100.
Koke, where you behind me at JAX? Someone behind me is also doing the VQ, but my daughter was so tired that I had to leave right after we met Greg. He really was a class act last night. Stories of past, cycling, etc, and he only spoke of the controversies when asked. Very personable and nice. His advice to me "don't listen to your dreams, just do it"--I've been having dreams of falling asleep after HJ and missing the cut off for the VQ. He said he used to have dreams of sleeping in and missing the Prologue of the Tour (even after he stopped racing)
I agree that LeMond is/was an amazing cyclist, but why do you think a high VO2Max makes him such? If his VO2Max is so high, shouldn't you expect him to win every race? And he doesn't have the fastest average speed in a TDF Time Trial -- that would be Dave Z from 2005.
You're right about the speed record (my info was a couple years old). I was just comparing two great american cyclists. I think most people would by default say Lance was the best US cyclist so i gave multiple reasons why I think Greg is better (not just VO2 max). VO2 max is a general indicator of natural ability and fitness not some superpower that makes you win every race.
