If you mean, the cyclometer will start to track/store the GPS coordinates automatically, then that's really cool. What I meant to say is I can power the 305 up where it syncs up with the satellites and then sits idle. In this mode, it can even tell me my speed and distance but it won't store track my movements until I click "start". To my chagrin, I forget to click start more times than I'm willing to admit. ;)

Wondering if you can help with my mac, 305 problem. This is my second time uploading to motionbase with my mac and the first time had no problems and now the 305 is not being recognized. I have the new update yet I'm failing on the connection test. Any clues? I've emailed Garmin but trying to find answers while I wait.

Thanks to Garys and I was able to pick one up at Best Buy. Couple questions, how is the mount that Garmin supplies? Has anybody had problems with it it breaking and throwing your GPS out into the wilderness.

I also loaded some trails from Geoladder and the way to pull up the trail is through training correct? When I tried to locate the loaded trails in the navigation menu nothing shows up. Thanks guys.

Before calling customer service about this problem, I updated the firmware (Because I know that's the first thing they ask)
It seems to have corrected this problem so far

Update: The elevation on out and back rides has been consistently off by 200-400 feet on half of the ride. I called Garmin and they are sending a replacement...

Cheapest way to send back a unit to Garmin?

So my Edge completely and thoroughly died after only a handful of times using it but Garmin Customer Service is AWESOME and going to send me a brand new one for free along with a cadence sensor (haha not that I'll use it but still cool!) and another mount.

So my question is: What is the best way to send it back, in terms of CHEAPEST? The rep told me a padded envelope is fine so do any of you guys have experience with sending one back? Should I use UPS or Fedex? She said I should insure it for the brand new price since its only like 3 months old. How much is this gonna cost me?

    Thanks!

Edit: Rep recomended shipping UPS or Fedex since they have tracking...

shouldn't be more than $5 to ship it if you use USPS. They also have padded envolopes that you can buy at the post office.

If anyone doesn't like manuals you can always try 'garminblog' on Youtube. 197 videos!

I used the method described below to "find" The Path and load the location into my 705. (Google sends the data through Garmin connect). With that data the 705 can generate directions.

    Mine said UPS/Fedex today.

The notorious problem the 305's have of turning off when it gets bumpy is now being fixed/warrantied no matter when you bought it. I've been putting mine off for the last few months and they told me no charge. :bang:

I've got a small box that i'm padding.

Edge - Insurance against falling off

Cheap tip for keeping your Edge from disappearing.

    1. Remove Handlebar from stem
    2. Place some utility rubber bands over the stem
    3. Replace Handlebar
    4. Place Edge in mount, snap rubberbands over it
This also works if the tab on the mount breaks as it often does.

Has anyone else noticed inconsistencies with the data depending on where it's loaded? For example, I can ride 21 mi and climb 2400 feet per the unit. When I load it to my computer it might say I did 24 miles and climbed 2250 feet and when I put it on Geoladders it might say 24 miles and 2500 feet. There doesn't seem to be any specific pattern.

Also, I did a backpacking trip this weekend and it always loses battery life at elevation so I turn it on when I start, off when I stop for the night, etc. It finally died 10.5 miles into the 15 mile round trip, yet when I loaded it to my center and geoladders it picked up the entire 15 mile route with all my laps...how does it calculate when it was turned off?

Not a big deal, I was just curious if anyone else had the same things happen to theirs.

The different stats are due to different algorithms used by Garmin/SportTracks/Geoladders/etc. That's just the way it is, I don't understand it either. Normal, but frustrating.

It died 15 miles into a 20 mile round trip.
One way it's 5.4 miles to Kearsage Pass, 10 miles to Charlotte Lake according to your track.

For long stops do turn it off. It's always computing position whether the timer is running or not.

re climbing: Each of the programs computes the climbing from the points recorded by your GPS. The data is averaged to lessen the effects of random inaccuracies. Different programs = different results.

Specifically the accumulation algorithm typically applies a smoothing algorithm. Some applications such as SportTracks allows you to adjust the smoothing algorithm i.e. adjust the amount of smoothing applied to the raw data points. Less smoothing typically increases ascent (think of all those little errors and ups and down being added up) while more smoothing typically decreases it but may be more accurate, but too much smoothing and you will lose those whoop-dee-doos that you go through. However, In some cases if they are using splines, higher order functions or sliding weighted averages the results can seem counter intuitive.

    Abui...are you a MatLab guy?

The odds that I am correct is approximately 3.14159 to 1
